As RedState reported, New York Attorney General Letitia James, infamous for bragging about targeting now-President Donald Trump, is currently under federal investigation for multiple cases of alleged mortgage fraud. In the aftermath of that news, she's speaking out, attempting to explain the discrepancies while accusing the Trump-led Department of Justice of targeting her for political reasons.

You couldn't dream up irony any thicker than this, and if this is all she's got as far as excuses go, she just might be toast.
Letitia James says she “mistakenly” claimed Virginia residency in loan documents

I mean, who hasn’t done that a time or two? Right?

JAMES: As you know, we filed a lawsuit against Donald, the former, Donald Trump, and his family. We secured a $454 million judgment against him, which is on appeal. The case is on appeal. I have no idea when that case will be decided. This investigation into me is nothing more than retribution. It's baseless. It has to do with the fact that on a power of attorney, I mistakenly indicated that I was a state of Virginia, but prior to that, I had indicted to the mortgage broker that, in fact, in bold cap letters that I was not a resident of Virginia and I never will be, and in the mortgage application, I indicated that I would not live in Virginia and that I was not a resident. They just took the power of attorney, and they are using that as the basis for enforcement for their investigation, when in reality, the power of attorney was never used to determine my eligibility for a mortgage for my niece for a home in the state of Virginia. My niece, who has children, and because I am a good aunt, I wanted her to have a home.
That sounds less than convincing to me. Whether she was buying a home for her niece to live in or not is completely irrelevant and an obvious emotional play to deflect from what she did. She presumably still owns the property, and long-term equity is where most of one's money is made when it comes to investment properties. Regardless, how do you "mistakenly" testify on a power of attorney that you are a resident of a state you don't live in and "never" will live in? I've bought three houses over the years, and the paperwork process is thorough. Things are checked and double-checked. That this was an accident seems improbable.
Further, James is not telling the truth about the extent of the case against her. This wasn't just one power of attorney form, though that would be worthy of investigation on its own. She also allegedly claimed her father as her husband on a 1983 mortgage, and she misrepresented the number of units she owned regarding a New York rental property, which helped her secure a lower interest rate. So if those were all "mistakes," she sure is mistake-prone.
But no one believes these were mistakes. James is a corrupt politician who has repeatedly weaponized her position to try to take down her political opponents. Never mind the carnage she's done to regular New Yorkers with her soft-on-crime, "social justice" approach to justice. The DOJ owes her no deference, and the fact that she's already lying about all the evidence against her tells me she's scared. You can hear it in her voice. James knows there's a "there" here, and she is setting up her PR campaign early to hopefully garner support. But all the support from Democrats and the press in the world isn't going to help her against the current DOJ.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander. James had a chance not to destroy norms surrounding targeting one's political opponents. Not only did she choose to do so, but she used it as a means to up her profile in vicious fashion. Well, the tables have turned, and justice awaits. No one is above the law, remember?
