Grotesque: James Clyburn Shows Just How Far Democrats Were Willing to Go Covering Up Biden's Condition

The revelations surrounding Joe Biden's condition while president have exploded over the last week, including Sunday's news that the former president has an aggressive cancer that has metastasized to the bone.

For now, I'll leave the deep analysis of that timeline alone. Cancer sucks, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. With that said, given the level of care provided to presidents, it seems improbable that he could have reached such an advanced stage without anyone knowing. Which again points the finger not at Biden, who we know was and continues to suffer from advanced mental decline, but at those around him who saw him as a vehicle to remain in power.

That brings me to Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), who is often credited with saving Biden's presidential candidacy when it looked like Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) was walking away with the nomination. Just how far were Democrats willing to go to keep the White House despite knowing the now-former president was incapable of remaining in office? According to Clyburn, all the way.

TAPPER: Do you think that Joe Biden really would have been able to perform as president all the way through January 2029 when he would be 86?

CLYBURN: Yes, I thought that back then. I still think that, but I don't know that. When people ask me, "Did I know this or did I know the other?" and the fact of the matter is, no, I didn't. And that's, you're making my point here, so it's not all about age. I've seen people develop Alzheimer's when they're in their 30s and 40s. So it's not about age. It's about the ability to do the job, and I never saw anything that allowed me to think that Joe Biden was not able to do the job.

Clyburn's answer is too cute by half and is a clear attempt to straddle the fence without chafing his backside. On the one hand, he says he still thinks Biden could have served another term. On the other hand, he tries to abscond from responsibility for that grotesque, clearly selfish assessment by saying he doesn't know for sure because he never "saw anything" to suggest Joe Biden was not able to do the job.

He never saw anything? Really? He never saw the memory lapses, the slurring of speech, the numerous falls, the getting lost at events, and sudden explosions of anger? Did he miss Robert Hur, the then-special counsel, testifying under oath that Biden was essentially senile? Because we all saw that publicly, and Clyburn had more access to Biden than any of us. Yet, he sits there and blatantly lies about what he knew and when to avoid any scrutiny for his decision to keep pushing the former president toward another term. That's grotesque.

What Clyburn is confirming is that he and other Democrats would have happily taken advantage of an ailing, incapable Biden to ensure their political opponents didn't gain power. The only thing that stopped them was that late-June debate. Without that cataclysmic event, the lying would have continued, and had Biden prevailed, we still have no confirmation about any of this stuff because the cover-up would have continued. That it now seems very likely a cancer diagnosis was hidden as well only makes matters that much worse.
