WHCA 'Nerd Prom' Marked by Insulting Gaslighting and the Press Learning Zero Lessons

The White House Correspondents' Dinner was on Saturday night, and you probably didn't even realize it. The once lauded event has always been festival of partisan hackery, but over the last decade, the press' bias has reduced it to an afterthought, only covered by those who went and cared about by no one who didn't.

The 2025 "nerd prom" was no different, with perhaps one exception. Axios' Alex Thompson received an award, and during his speech, he reminded his colleagues that many of them "missed" Joe Biden's very public decline.

That bit of attempted levity was undermined by the fact that no one in the press actually "missed" anything. Biden's bumbling senility was on full display from the 2020 campaign onward. If regular people could see it but the journalistic class couldn't, then perhaps it's time for a new journalistic class. Of course, they all saw it, and worse, they attacked and demeaned anyone who reported on it as pushing "cheap fakes" and the like.

So you'll have to forgive me for not just believing it was all an honest mistake. You'll also have to forgive me for dismissing what Eugene Daniels, the current head of the WHCA, had to say.

DANIELS: We journalists are a lot of things. We are competitive and pushy. We are impatient, and sometimes we think we know everything, but we are also human. We miss our families and significant life moments in service to this job. We care deeply about accuracy and take seriously the heavy responsibility of being stewards of the public’s trust. What we are not is the opposition. What we are not is the enemy of the people. And what we are not is the enemy of the state!

(Applause)

For reference, Daniels is a host on MSNBC, the most far-left network in existence. Have he and his fellow press members comported themselves as the "opposition?" Absolutely. I'd also cool it with the talk of great sacrifice from a class of people who mostly work from their couches if they aren't sitting in cushy studios.

Included in Daniels' words is the rank arrogance and inability to admit fault that has turned the mainstream press into a pariah. Progress would be admitting there are issues, changing their approach, and trying to regain trust. What's not progress is doubling down on how important they supposedly are while lying to people about their motivations and concerns for the public trust.

Remember when a verbatim question from a reporter ended up on a pre-printed Biden notecard, complete with a picture of who the questioner would be and her name spelled phonetically (because he was and remains senile)? The WHCA has still provided no explanation, and the journalist involved sits on its board.

Appointing Daniels to the head of the WHCA in mid-2024 was an admission by the press that they intend to learn no lessons whatsoever from their downfall. After the disaster that was Kelly O'Donnell, there could have been a change in direction that started the press on a path back to credibility. Instead, they decided an MSNBC talking head would be the perfect choice to lead them into the future, and lead them he has. Directly into a brick wall of self-entitled nonsense that will do nothing but continue to diminish their standing.
