Joe Biden's former Chief of Staff and one of his longest-running confidants was caught on a leaked recording ranting against the president's current communications strategy. It represented the latest sign that Democrats are panicking over the prospect of Donald Trump emerging victorious after November's election.
Ronald Klain, who served as Chief of Staff for both Biden's vice presidency and presidency, was unknowingly recorded at a private event in which he launched into an obscenity-filled critique of the current president. Specifically, he claimed that Biden was too focused on mundane "accomplishments" and not on what Americans actually care about.

“I think the president is out there too much talking about bridges,” Klain said, according to audio exclusively obtained by Politico. “He does two or three events a week where he’s cutting a ribbon on a bridge. And here’s a bridge. Like, I tell you, if you go into the grocery store, you go to the grocery store and, you know, eggs and milk are expensive, the fact that there’s a fucking bridge is not [inaudible].”
...
“He’s not a congressman. He’s not running for Congress,” said Klain. “I think it’s kind of a fool’s errand. I think that [it] also doesn’t get covered that much because, look, it’s a fucking bridge. Like it’s a bridge, and how interesting is the bridge? It’s a little interesting but it’s not a lot interesting.”
I hate to be the first conservative to ever say this, but Klain is correct, at least on the surface. Biden's primary campaign strategy has been to take short flights to Mid-Western states (probably because he can't handle extended trips) where he gives the same speech over and over to union workers as he tries to take credit for some federally-funded infrastructure project.
If you're a working American struggling to make ends meet as costs continue to skyrocket, do you care about a bridge being opened in Pennsylvania? Are you impressed that your taxpayer dollars were spent to pay off unions who will in turn dump gobs of money into Biden's campaign? Does any of that make your everyday life better? The answer is no, and it makes Biden look like an out-of-touch narcissist.
Still, the problem with Klain's analysis is two-fold. For one, on any given day, Biden is so out of it that he believes he's running for Congress.

Secondly, Klain's analysis assumes a simple shift in messaging could change Biden's fortunes. That seems increasingly unlikely. What's he going to shift to? Bragging about the border crisis? The multiple wars that have broken out on his watch? Interest rates being so high that no one can afford a home? Prices being up nearly 20 percent since he took office?
Yeah, spending time fluffing infrastructure projects isn't working, but he's got no alternative. That's not to say Biden can't win the election. I've been on the block long enough to know negative partisanship is a heck of a drug and things can shift dramatically. It's not going to be because of anything Biden himself does, though. Klain might as well be demanding the president grow wings and fly.
