CNN's Reaction to Trump's Latest Legal Issue Is Unintentionally Hilarious

As RedState reported, another indictment is looming against Donald Trump. The former president has been summoned to appear before a grand jury as part of Jack Smith’s criminal investigation into January 6th.

What the specific charges might be are still a mystery. Most are speculating it has something to do with the actual unrest that took place at the Capitol Building, but it’s also possible Smith is zeroing in on Trump’s alleged involvement in the so-called “alternate elector” scheme.

I’ve previously argued against the idea that illegality given nothing about the plan was followed through on. It would seem illogical to charge someone for simply entertaining the idea of doing something they didn’t ultimately do, but we are dealing with a DOJ prosecutor and a DC-area court system so logic goes out the window.

Regardless, the press was obviously in a frenzy following the news, and CNN managed to deliver the most unintentionally hilarious performance of the day. In a move that had me laughing out loud, the liberal network spent its time giving a play-by-play of Special Counsel Jack Smith buying a Subway sandwich. No, I’m not kidding.

This wasn’t just an idle mention, either. John King and Dana Bash took the revelation of Smith buying a sandwich and discussed it as a historic occurance.

These people are so obsessed with taking down one man that they actually convinced themselves that a DOJ special counsel chose to buy a sandwich as a way to send a “message” to Donald Trump. Worse, they played out their fantasy live on air without a hint of self-awareness.

It “spoke volumes,” Dana Bash proclaimed while asserting that the “imagery was intentional.” King toed the same line, claiming that Smith’s purchase of the sandwich was meant to say that “I’m not going anywhere.

Another one of the panelists, Evan Perez, was equally enchanted. He actually stated about Smith that “he stood in line like everybody else,” as if that was some stunning development. What else is he supposed to do? Prosecutors also don’t get to skip the line at restaurants just because they are going after Donald Trump.

So was the imagery “intentional” as Bash stated? Almost certainly not. Prosecutors are not royalty. They don’t have servants who bring them lunch on a daily basis. Perhaps they could ask an assistant to do so if a deposition or some such was occurring, but it wouldn’t be seen as out of the ordinary at all for a prosecutor to go purchase his own lunch. I see no evidence at all that Smith was trying to do anything but satisfy his hunger.

Sensationalism is the name of the game in cable news, though, and CNN is desperately trying to make itself relevant again. With the recent sidelining of Chris Licht, the network seems content to go back to its Jeff Zucker-birthed roots of being wildly conspiratorial about Republicans. I predict the results don’t be positive.
