CNN's Internal Civil War Goes Nuclear, CEO Chris Licht Now Being Publicly Condemned By His Own Employees

Things are not good over at CNN, which is pretty much an evergreen statement given the network’s established record of failure. The latest drama involves whether current CEO Chris Licht is headed out the door.

On Saturday, news that Licht had been removed from overseeing the left-wing network’s business operations broke. That signaled that David Zaslav, head of Warner Brothers Discover (which owns CNN), had lost faith in his CEO’s ability to keep things running.

Now, the internal civil war has gone public, and Licht’s underlings are attacking him out in the open. Oliver Darcy, who inexplicably escaped the purge at the network that saw Brian Stelter kicked to the curb, took a shot at Licht in his newsletter.

CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy gave voice to a chorus of insiders furious at boss Chris Licht, saying he “has lost the room” despite his apology in the wake of a scathing article about the network’s meltdown.

Darcy wrote in Monday’s edition of his “Reliable Sources” newsletter that last week’s damaging exposé in the Atlantic “called into serious question Licht’s judgment [and] his ability to lead the network’s staff.”

He added that Licht has “alienated much of the employee base and squandered the good will he had when he took helm of the network,” noting that Licht’s efforts to “reset relations more than a year into his tenure” may be too little too late.

That Darcy feels safe enough to levy these attacks publicly says that Licht no longer evencano hire and fire anymore. That means he’s a CEO in name only and is running on borrowed time.

Unfortunately for him, he’s largely responsible for his fate. When Licht took over, he had a choice to make. Was he going to mostly keep all the old pieces in place? Or was he going to clean the house and start with a fresh new vision? He chose option one, going so far as to keep a dysfunctional host like Don Lemon on for nearly a year. Other hosts and analysts were left in place or shuffled to new time slots. The editorial direction of the network also barely changed, with it remaining a left-wing bastion.

That meant that Licht, whatever intentions he had, was immediately faced with a hostile workforce that remained loyal to Jeff Zucker, the prior CEO. The result has been absolute chaos as his own employees continue to undermine him, now culminating with someone as unimpressive as Darcy trashing him in a CNN-sponsored newsletter.

With all that said, no one should buy this gaslighting by CNN employees that predated Licht. The network was a dumpster fire under Zucker, consistently failing in the ratings and bleeding money. Licht is not responsible for the current state of things. He’s just responsible for not fixing it. Darcy and many of the other on-air personalities are the problem. They have taken what used to be the most popular cable news network in the world and ran it into the ground. Instead of taking responsibility, they are attacking Licht. It’s completely transparent.
