The anti-Trump coalition spent most of Tuesday gloating about the January 6th committee testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide inside the White House, calling it game-changing and suggesting the walls are closing in on former President Donald Trump. In reality, her testimony was more of the same, i.e. loaded with hearsay that wouldn’t amount to much of anything–even if everything said was true.
What the latest “emergency” hearing reiterated is that January 6th committee doesn’t exist to actually provide evidence of its claims. Rather, it exists to throw as much garbage against the wall as possible in hopes the sheer amount of claims leads people to an unsupported conclusion.
The biggest example of that to come from Hutchinson’s testimony was a wild claim that Trump was so excited to go wage insurrection at the Capitol Building that he assaulted two Secret Service agents and tried to grab the steering wheel of the car he was in. Sounds incredible, right?
Cassidy Hutchinson testifies that she was told that as then-President Donald Trump was being driven back to the White House after the Jan. 6 rally that he demanded to be taken to the Capitol and tried to grab the steering wheel from a Secret Service agent. https://t.co/JefVhEsY0b pic.twitter.com/uUyQcnSlLG

The entire theme of Hutchinson’s testimony was that she heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend. Only the clowns on the January 6th committee could manage to hold up a person who didn’t witness essentially anything she claimed as “bombshell” proof of some grand conspiracy to commit insurrection. But again, even if what her statements were true, they didn’t add up to any smoking gun. There could be a litany of reasons Trump might have wanted to go to the Capitol, apart from storming the building and stealing Nancy Pelosi’s beer.
Of course, and you might want to sit down for this, Hutchinson’s crazy claim appears to be false. Just hours into the media frenzy pronouncing the certain demise of Trump (and the brilliance of the January 6th committee), a report from none other than NBC News blew everything apart.
🚨 A source close to the Secret Service tells me both Bobby Engel, the lead agent, and the presidential limousine/SUV driver are prepared to testify under oath that neither man was assaulted and that Mr. Trump never lunged for the steering wheel.

What an amazing turn of events that dumps all the pressure back into the laps of Liz Cheney and her merry band of Democrats. How in the world did they let Hutchinson testify to something that would be so easy to fact-check? And given prior reports of how much respect Trump showed the Secret Service agents who served him, it should have been obvious that they would speak up to set the record straight.
The only thing I can take from this is that the January 6th committee is full of idiots. They actually thought they could have an aide spin fanciful, third-hand tales and that there’d be no pushback. Besides, it never made sense in the first place. We are supposed to believe that Trump fought his way into the front seat of the presidential limo (or a suburban depending on who you ask) as a 74-year-old, overweight man, overtaking two Secret Service agents to “grab the wheel?” I mean, if he wanted to go to the Capitol, he was the president. All he had to do was say “take me to the Capitol.”
Honestly, I can’t stop laughing. I find this entire episode absolutely hilarious. I hope the January 6th committee keeps these hearings going just for the entertainment value. I also hope Republicans don’t forget those on their own side who rushed to once again swallow the hook on ridiculous, completely absurd accusation against Donald Trump.
