The Front-Runner for the Most Nonsensical Ukraine Take Emerges

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in more than its fair number of terrible takes. But what’s the worst one? Candace Owens citing Vladimir Putin’s speech as proof Russia is justified is obviously on the list. Later, The Daily Wire host backtracked a bit though, pointing more to ignorance than malice driving her assertion.

But then there are those who obviously know better and still rush to spew nonsense in an attempt to shoehorn the situation with Ukraine into their far-left, woke worldview.

Enter Nikole Hannah-Jones, founder of the error-riddled 1619 Project. According to her, the real problem with Western support for Ukraine is that it’s upholding a dog-whistling social construct that is meant to get us to care because white people are suffering.

Sit back and really soak this one in.

There’s so much wrong here that it’s hard to know where to begin.

Let’s go with the modern implications first. Clearly, it is false that the Western world only cares about countries that are “like them.” The United States and the European Union, for all their flaws in dealing with geopolitics, spend incredibly large amounts of money in Africa and Asia every year helping people. The same is true for private charities. Does the West get any credit for that, or are we all just rabid racists waiting on a dog whistle to care about Ukraine?

Further, I seem to recall Americans caring so much about the fall of Afghanistan that the tragedy has led to the collapse of Joe Biden’s presidency. Is Afghanistan part of Europe and I just wasn’t aware? There has also been a consistent outcry against China’s atrocities. Is China part of Europe? Hannah-Jones’ claim falls flat on its face on the basis of those realities alone. Clearly, the existence of Europe is not the driving force behind concern for Ukraine.

Besides, Ukraine is not “like us” if the comparison is to contemporary Europe. It’s a poor nation with an income per capita of less than $2200. Its history is filled with oppression and its culture is far more traditional than most. Does their suffering just not count because they happen to be white?

As to the notion that Europe was drawn up as a dog-whistle, the separation of Europe and Asia goes back to the 6th century BC. I don’t think the Greek geographers involved in that were too concerned about racist dog-whistles in 2022. Yet, Hannah-Jones gets paid lots of money to deliver such brilliant analysis.

Honestly, what kind of depraved person is so obsessed with racial essentialism that they’d try to turn the conflict in Ukraine into a false, woke history lesson? People are dying, including women and children. Putin’s aggression is clearly unjustified. Shouldn’t that be enough? But for a grifter like Hannah-Jones, the next score is always being prepped for, and she senses a threat from any situation that might encroach on her top-level victim status. What a shallow, depressing way to think.
