I’m not sure what the point is of this is aside from Mitt Romney just doing Mitt Romney things.

Instead of just calling the President up on the phone to express any concerns, the Utah senator decided to lock arms with Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) to write a public letter warning the President about complying with oversight of the new relief bill. Maximum media exposure always seems to follow Romney around, by sheer coincidence I’m sure.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Friday released a letter with Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) calling on President Trump to comply with the oversight requirements Congress attached to the $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief package signed into law last week.

“With trillions of taxpayer dollars being spent, it is critically important for the Administration to ensure full transparency and willingness for independent oversight,” Romney and Tester wrote in the April 3 letter to Trump.

Romney and Tester continued by suggesting that Trump might influence the Inspector General’s coming reports.

Romney and Tester on Friday warned the president not to interfere in the inspector general’s quarterly reports to Congress.

“We expect that the Special Inspector General will fulfill its statutory responsibilities, and look forward to working with your administration to ensure robust oversight of taxpayer dollars,” they wrote.

Is there any indication the President isn’t going to follow the law in regards to the relief bill or is this just Romney bloviating? We are in the midst of a full blown pandemic, the economy is on the brink, and Senators are worrying about grandstanding over misconduct that hasn’t even happened. It just seems pointless to me. If Trump does something out of line, that would be the time in which to make statements like this.

I’ll go ahead and make a prediction. With so much money going out, so quickly, there will be mistakes made. Those mistakes will be seized on by Romney and Democrats as a whole as yet another scandal to push. We’ve already seen the House start a not so bi-partisan commission to snipe at Trump and dig into his response to this crisis. Now is not the time for any of this.

Everyone should be focused on the task at hand right now. Oversight will come. If something goes wrong, that bridge can be crossed when we get to it.
