Understanding how quotation marks work when asserting someone said something is apparently not a prerequisite for serving in Congress.
Over the past few days there was a silly dust-up over some high school kids (yes, high school kids) joking around with a cardboard cut out of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
This led AOC to call for the doxxing of the kids, because everything is stupid these days.
McConnell campaign responds to @AOC criticism of this pic: “Team Mitch in no way condones any aggressive, suggestive, or demeaning act toward life sized cardboard cut outs of any gender in a manner similar to what we saw from Pres Obama's speechwriting staff several years ago” pic.twitter.com/TH8IzUcWNN

The Daily Beast, being the virtuous, honest media broker that it is, then decided to make up a quote after Mitch McConnell’s campaign gave their (admittedly hilarious) response, which is on the left in the above tweet. The shoutout to the adult Obama staffers who groped a Hillary cut-out was just gold.
Mitch McConnell's campaign manager essentially says boys will be boys in response to that image of teens groping and choking a cutout of @AOC https://t.co/kRrAKUkf60

The problem is that Mitch McConnell didn’t say that. He pointedly says the behavior by the students wasn’t acceptable. Yet, his response was clearly meant to point out the absurdity of the media going after some high school kids who don’t even work for his campaign while they ignored the same actions from adult Obama officials.

AOC then took the false attribution by The Daily Beast and presented it as a real quote from Mitch McConnell so she could whine about being a victim some more.
“Boys will be boys.”
Is that also the reason why you’ve chosen to block the Violence Against Women act too, @senatemajldr?
It prevents dating partners w/ records of abuse + stalking women (also an early warning sign from many mass shooters) from obtaining a gun. https://t.co/shWCRmEv60

Keep in mind, this is the same AOC who wasn’t bothered at all by one of her superfans trying to firebomb an ICE facility while quoting her concentration camp rhetoric. But she’s all for trying to shame Mitch McConnell for not having control over the senses of humor of some high school kids.
And just to make sure this story got even more ridiculous, Newsweek then took the fake quote and fake quoted it again in a story defending AOC.

AOC’s act has grown thin, even with her home state where, in predominantly blue New York, she can only pull a 41% approval rating. The persistent playing of the victim has become white noise, indistinguishable from whatever the last complaint she made on Twitter was (and the list grows daily).
I’m really curious to see if someone attempts to primary her next year or if the Democrat party decides they just have to live with her.
