A viral video has caused shock on social media after a high school football player committed an act on Friday that is the epitome of unsportsmanlike conduct.
I’ll tell you up front: we don’t know why he did it, and the schools involved aren’t talking. We do know that the player was ejected, but we don’t know if there will be further punishment from the school — or from law enforcement.
What happened? As pumped-up players took to the field at a high school homecoming game between two Portland, Oregon public schools — the Jefferson High School Democrats (the "Demos," snicker) against the Ulysses S. Grant High School Generals — a Jefferson player bulldozed an unsuspecting Grant rival who was running out with the American flag.
There looked to be no immediate provocation or inciting incident. The Jefferson athlete, who was playing on his home field, just came out of nowhere like a crazed missile and smashed his opponent to the ground:

Jeez Louise. That could have actually led to serious injury.
But what about the motive — what’s behind this apparent example of random violence? At first blush, it certainly looks like it could be a case of anti-Americanism; after all, this occurred in one of the most far-left and unpatriotic cities in the country, Portland. But for all we know, it could be a personal beef.
You might think the educational authorities would wish to explain, but you’d be wrong:
If you're looking for answers as to why a Portland, Oregon high school football player lit up an opponent who carried an American flag onto the field this past Friday night, you're out of luck.
OutKick's attempt to get answers from Jefferson High School, where the player attends, were left unanswered on Monday. An attempt to reach Jefferson Athletic Director Donnie Siel Monday afternoon by phone went unanswered, as did an attempt to reach Jefferson principal Drake Shelton. A message left for his office was not returned.
The state was tight-lipped too:
The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), the state school athletic governing body, told OutKick in a statement that it "is aware of the pre-game incident" and noted that the player was ejected and didn't play in the game. "Rivalry game or not, there’s no place for this behavior before, during, or after an interscholastic contest," the OSAA added.
There were many online claims that Jefferson’s Instagram account celebrated the attack, but they deny that the account is theirs. Still, somebody posted this:
🚨 UNBELIEVABLE: A Jefferson High player literally CLOTHESLINED a rival carrying the American flag onto the field!

And their Instagram actually CELEBRATED it!
This is outright assault. Disgraceful! Expel him IMMEDIATELY! 🇺🇸🤬 https://t.co/lnLZz183lr
Whoever the person behind the deleted Instagram account is, they blamed the violence on pre-game tensions and not the American flag in a since-deleted post. The message was screenshotted by Oregon State Director of Women for Gun Rights Taren Feist:
…there was disrespect shown toward Jefferson by Grant players and members of their coaching staff before the game, and if you were there to witness what happened, you would understand the full context.
Well then why don’t you tell us?
Evidently the school has received blowback, because the mystery person then went on a long rant about racism.
At Jefferson, we are proud of who we are. We are Black, Hispanic, white, and people from many different backgrounds who come together as one school and one community. Our diversity is something to be proud of, not something to attack...
I will not tolerate racial slurs, racist comments, or profanity directed toward our students, players, coaching staff, or anyone who represents Jefferson.
Notice what they didn’t say? “I will not tolerate Jefferson players blindsiding rivals with no warning.”
There are plenty of unanswered questions here, like why won’t officials announce what further punishment is being considered, what caused the shock hit if it wasn’t anti-Americanism, and who is behind the mystery Instagram posts.
Whatever the motivation for this outburst, it should not be tolerated. I can’t think of a single reason that this hotheaded player shouldn’t be suspended for the season — or even permanently.
It’s Oregon, though, where consequences are optional, so if he’s a good player, he’ll probably be right back on the field as soon as this thing is off the front pages.
