The White House announced some serious but hopefully not tragic news Monday: Chief of Staff Susie Wiles has been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and will undergo treatment right away.

She is wearing pink today during a press briefing and appears to be in good spirits.

Since she is apparently tough as nails, she will continue her duties even as doctors treat the cancer. The good news, according to Trump: “her prognosis is excellent!”

He hailed Wiles in a Truth Social post Monday morning:

Here is the full text of the president's statement:

Susie Wiles is an incredible Chief of Staff, a great person, and one of the strongest people I know but, unfortunately, she has been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, and has decided to take on this challenge, IMMEDIATELY, as opposed to waiting. She has a fantastic medical team, and her prognosis is excellent! During the treatment period, she will be spending virtually full time at the White House, which makes me, as President, very happy! Her Strength and her Commitment to continue doing the job she loves, and does so well, while undergoing treatment, tells you everything you need to know about her. Susie, as one of my closest and most important advisors, is tough and deeply committed to serving the American People. She will soon be better than ever! Melania and I are with her in every way, and we look forward to working with Susie on the many big and wonderful things that are happening for the benefit of our Country! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Susie Wiles Promises to Be the No-Drama Mama of the Trump West Wing

Trump named Wiles chief of staff on January 20, 2025, the day he began his second (non-conservative) term. She has proved to be a strong leader who allows little drama in the administration and keeps operations running smoothly, especially compared to Trump’s first term, where there was more chaos.

She is the first woman to hold the role.

She is also the daughter of Pat Summerall, the former NFL player and beloved sportscaster who, for decades, teamed up with John Madden to make up one of the greatest broadcasting duos in history.

The tributes to Wiles are pouring in on social media, even from a Democrat senator:

I have known many breast cancer survivors who overcame the disease and went on to lead full and productive lives. Of course, not all the stories are happy, and it is obviously a condition to be taken seriously. It’s early stage, though, and the prognosis is excellent.

We wish Ms. Wiles a full and speedy recovery.

Another strong-willed and amazing woman in the administration, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, signaled her unwavering support:

I know I speak for the President and the entire White House when I say that we are all praying for Susie and rallying behind her as she prepares to fight this battle against breast cancer. 💗
