Kamala Harris Lost, So Naturally the Electoral College Is Broken

Kamala Harris is back on the road, and apparently the 2024 election taught her one lesson above all others: the system must be the problem.

During a Friday swing through New Orleans, the former vice president told students she plans to spend the next several months rallying voters across the South. Harris tied the tour to the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which she claimed, “basically undid the Voting Rights Act.” She also accused Republicans of trying to cheat ahead of the November midterms.

“I’m spending my time to remind people that even though they’re trying to put obstacles in front of us, even though they’re trying to cheat — because they are trying to cheat,” Harris said, “that that’s not a reason that we just stay in bed and keep the covers over our heads and say, ‘well, wake me up when it’s over.’”

Stirring stuff. A sober defense of democracy from the woman currently crisscrossing the country to tell Democrats that the other side cheats, the Electoral College is rigged, and what her party really needs is more "ruthlessness." At the same rally, Harris was welcomed as "Madame President." The Electoral College apparently missed that memo.

Harris spent Friday barnstorming New Orleans. She addressed hundreds of students at an InspireNOLA back-to-school rally in the morning, then headlined the Louisiana Democrat Party’s “Masquerade Sneaker Ball” that evening. New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno also presented her with a ceremonial key to the city at a private event before the gala. Apparently losing the presidency comes with perks.

Prepared excerpts supplied ahead of Harris’s evening address said Democrats needed to develop a “ruthlessness that must be the attitude of the Democratic Party.” She was careful to explain that she meant the nice kind of ruthlessness.

“This fight requires that we start to get comfortable with some things — including having a certain kind of ruthlessness. Now, I don’t mean ruthlessness like the cruelty they show. I mean the kind that is uncompromising in its impatience with injustice, that shows no mercy for corruption, that fights back hard when they threaten the power of the people.”

Compassionate ruthlessness. Ruthlessness with guardrails. Ruthlessness that went through a focus group and came back approved for a Democratic fundraiser.

The prepared remarks were less delicate when Harris described the Republican Party. She called it morally corrupt and accused it of wanting to “sow chaos, grab wealth and abuse power.”

“The good news is Donald Trump will be term limited out. However, please let us be clear: there is no term limit on this new Republican Party built in his image — and folks, there is a deep moral corruption about this new Republican Party. Their ideology is clearly to create a smash-and-grab world. To sow chaos, grab wealth and abuse power.”

Republicans cheat. Republicans are morally corrupt. Democrats need to show no mercy. The coconut tree and the brat summer are over. This is the ruthlessness era.

The New Orleans appearance followed another Harris speech on July 31 at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville. There, while laying out ideas for Democrats ahead of the midterms and the 2028 presidential race, she floated reopening one of her party’s favorite grievances.

“I know this is going to be controversial coming from me in particular — we need to revisit the Electoral College.”

Harris didn't say what "revisit" actually means. The timing is its own punchline. Trump beat her in the Electoral College in 2024, and won the popular vote. There is no machinery to blame. There is only the outcome.

The welcome was not unanimous. Outside the gala, protesters hit Harris over her support for Israel and demanded the DNC finally release its autopsy of the 2024 loss, the one party leadership has been sitting on. Her own coalition is already relitigating why she lost before she has even announced she is running again.

Harris is reportedly considering another presidential run in 2028. Her early message now includes cheating Republicans, a morally corrupt opposition party, Democratic ruthlessness, and fresh questions about the Electoral College. For a politician who secured the 2024 nomination after Joe Biden quit the race, without winning a presidential primary of her own, the democracy lecture could still use some work.
