If it weren't for the deadly serious fact that the future of the country hangs in the balance, watching the ongoing clown car show that is the Democrat Party would be immensely comical. There cannot be a party that has tripped over and sabotaged itself more than modern Democrats. The latest installment of this dark comedy is the withdrawal from the Maine Senate race of Graham Platner. But don't worry, Maine Democrats think they can fix it.
Dear Maine Voters,

Democrats think you're stupid and just nullified your primary votes so they can install a different candidate.
"No Kings," right?

On Wednesday, the Maine Democratic Party announced it would hold a convention to pick a replacement candidate for Graham Platner. During an emergency meeting, over 100 committee members voted in favor of holding a convention to select a new candidate for the Senate race by the July 27 deadline.
The process would work like this: The convention will be made up of 600 delegates, with 500 of those delegates elected proportionally by the county committees. The remaining 100 delegates will be made up of state committee members. Each county committee will caucus before the state nominating convention to elect the 500 delegates. County chairs are scheduled to meet Thursday, although it is unknown if county committees or public caucuses will select the delegates.
Platner suspended his campaign following a rape allegation by an ex-girlfriend stemming from an alleged 2021 incident. Platner has denied the allegation. He is required to submit paperwork to remove his name from the ballot by Monday at 5 p.m. EDT. The Maine Democratic Party posted a brief statement on X, saying that they would be providing more details soon. Since the suspension of his campaign, several people, including former Maine gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson, brewery owner Dan Kleban, former congressional candidates Jordan Wood and Paige Loud, and former public health official Nirav Shah, have said they plan to run.
Democrats: “Graham Platner is obstructing a free and fair process.”

Forgetting they already nominated him in record numbers. More votes were cast for Platner than for any U.S. Senate nominee in Maine history.
The irony is incredible. pic.twitter.com/pcvCk1Phpw
My colleagues Nick Arama and Sister Toldjah have been chronicling Platner's fall from leftist grace, and the snarky catfighting that has ensued because of the situation the party now finds itself in because of Platner's past behavior that they thought they could just sneak through. But one thing he said in his rambling suspension speech that many might actually agree on was that "...These decisions need to be made in the open by the people of this state, the people who got us here.”

However, now that Maine Democrats have tossed the candidate, good or bad, nominated by the people of Maine in the primary, under the bus, as the convention and nominating process goes forward, which way are Maine Democrats going to steer the process in terms of candidates? Will there be a push to nominate a more "mainstream" Democratic candidate, if there are any of those left, or will they look for someone who is just as radical as Platner, and is in the same vein as Democratic Socialists who are winning nationwide, but without all the Platner baggage?
As we all know, this is not the first time Democrats have done the old switcheroo with candidates. This could get way more interesting before November.
Plenty of time. Honestly, at this point - considering how screwed up Maine Democrats seem - @grahamformaine might as well stay in the race. His base doesn't seem to care and all the "we won't support him" talk from the establishment is posturing, they'll come back. Screw 'em. https://t.co/qtfHqOYw24
