Update: More Illegal Immigrant Truck Drivers Nabbed by DOT After Latest Deadly Crash

Even as President Donald Trump and his administration are removing as many illegal immigrants from the country as possible, the effects of the Biden administration's open border policy will be felt by Americans for decades to come. Since last August's crash on a Florida highway, where three people were killed by an illegal immigrant operating an 18-wheeler, attention has been rightly placed on the problem of illegal immigrants who cannot read road signs operating vehicles.

Recently, the Department of Transportation conducted yet another crackdown on illegal truck drivers during a three-day operation at routine stops at weigh stations, and also through a program called "Operation SafeDRIVE" (Distracted, Reckless, Impaired, Visibility Enforcement). The crackdown ran from January 13-15 on many of the nation's major trucking routes through 26 states and the District of Columbia. The results continue to be alarming.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), roughly 2,000 unqualified truck drivers were taken off the road. The operation also comes in the wake of yet another deadly crash, as my colleague Teri Christoph reported, this time in Indiana, where an illegal immigrant driving an 18-wheeler slammed head-on into a van, killing four people.

The driver of that big rig, an illegal immigrant from Kyrgyzstan, used the Biden-era CBP-1 app to enter the country illegally in 2023. He was issued a commercial driver's license (CDL) by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). However, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's office says that the driver, Bekzhan Beishekeev, had legal status by using the app.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy praised the partnership between Operation SafeDRIVE and FMCSA, as well as with state law enforcement, which carried out around 8,200 inspections resulting in 704 drivers being removed from the road. Of those drivers, 500 were found to be failing in English proficiency requirements. In addition, 1,231 vehicles were deemed unroadworthy, and 56 people were arrested on charges ranging from DUI/DWI to being in the country illegally. Duffy said of the joint operation,

"Operation SafeDRIVE shows what happens when we work together with our law enforcement partners to pull unqualified drivers and vehicles off American roads. We need a whole-of-government approach to ensure the Trump administration’s strong standards of safety are in place to protect American families and reduce road accidents."

We have reported on this frightening reality on America's interstates at RedState since Harjinder Singh, an illegal immigrant from India, decided to make a U-turn on the Florida Turnpike in the 18-wheeler he was driving last August. A van carrying three people slammed into Singh's truck, killing all three. Singh had obtained CDLs in California and Washington.

In another case, Anmol Anmol, also in the country illegally, was issued a CDL in New York. His CDL listed his name as "NO NAME." He was later apprehended in Oklahoma. Other drivers not proficient in English were found to be bypassing weigh stations to avoid detection. Back in Pennsylvania, PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll, a Democrat, and Secretary of the Commonwealth, Al Schmidt, a Republican, both claim that Pennsylvania policy is not to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, and stated:

"All non-citizens who apply for driver’s licenses … must provide PennDOT with proof of identity and must have their legal presence in this country verified through the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database."

Thankfully, more illegal immigrant truck drivers are being taken off the road, but that is proof of just how many have fallen through the cracks and still need to be apprehended. It's still more food for thought the next time you are blending into traffic on the interstate.

Editor's Note: Thanks to President Trump, illegal immigration into our great country has virtually stopped. Despite the radical left's lies, new legislation wasn't needed to secure our border, just a new president.
