When we look back in time, 2020 will not be remembered for many good things. Most notably, a worldwide pandemic and the shutting down of society that came with it, and the worldwide protests that followed the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. There will always be professional protesters, but in the case of Floyd's death, the rush to virtue signal made otherwise rational people do irrational things. Even law enforcement officers hurried to "take a knee" in supposed solidarity with protesters. But now, some of those law enforcement officers are crying foul and want to give the "real" explanation of why they sided with violent protesters.
This lawsuit will drag on for years, and they won’t get their jobs back. An FBI Director can hire and fire whomever he wants. https://t.co/aLCjsmWnRM

You might remember the twelve FBI agents who knelt during a Floyd protest in Washington, D.C. Because there is a new FBI sheriff in town in the form of FBI Director Kash Patel, those agents were fired in September. Now, they are suing the Trump administration to get their jobs back. A statement from the FBI Agents Association read in part:
As Director Patel has repeatedly stated, nobody is above the law. But rather than providing these agents with fair treatment and due process, Patel chose to again violate the law by ignoring these agents’ constitutional and legal rights instead of following the requisite process.
The agents also claim that Patel fired them because they were seen as not being politically aligned with President Donald Trump. But what they claim is the "real" reason they were kneeling, and their historical comparison of it that is the best part. The agents claim that their kneeling was not a political expression, but instead, was an attempt to de-escalate a potentially violent situation. The partial explanation in the lawsuit, however, is much more...shall we say...colorful.
Plaintiffs were performing their duties as FBI Special Agents, employing reasonable de-escalation to prevent a potentially deadly confrontation with American citizens: a Washington Massacre that could have rivaled the Boston Massacre in 1770.
The Boston Massacre? Isn't that just a tad melodramatic and quite a reach? The lawsuit also goes on to claim that the agents were not provided with “sufficient equipment for responding to civil unrest, such as riot shields, gas masks, helmets, or other tactical gear.”

No one likely ordered these agents to kneel, and why should they? They are agents of the most premier law enforcement agency in the world. But the whole thing smacks a bit like a Nuremberg "we were just following orders" kind of thing. Was there a kind of herd mentality — one did it, and the others followed? Could the "real" explanation be equally disturbing? George Floyd protests were some of the most violent this nation has seen since the Civil Rights protests of the '60s. Did it just come down to a simple case of "we agree with you, don't beat us up?"
That explanation lines up with the lawsuit, which claims that the agents were in the middle of a chaotic situation in which the crowd started to "intentionally" push towards them and became "increasingly agitated" once they realized who the agents were. Some in the crowd began to chant "take a knee." The agents who were closest to the crowd did so, and others followed suit. The claim from the agents was that it was the “most tactically sound means to prevent violence and to maintain order.” No one wants violence, but the most tactically sound move is to give in to the bully?
The lawsuit is also asking for the agents to be reinstated, a court judgment saying the firings were unconstitutional, back pay and other monetary damages, and expungement of personnel files. But you have to wonder, if these agents are reinstated, and a situation gets sketchy, who will they kneel for next?
