Trump Says Meeting With Mamdani Could Happen: 'We'll Work Something Out'

With the election of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as New York City's next mayor, Democrats are no longer trying to hide their rapid left-wing slide into socialism but are embracing it. And if you look around the country, Mamdani may well be the first of many of his ilk. Mamdani has also made his dislike of President Donald Trump well known, and Trump has threatened to pull federal funding from the Big Apple. But with Trump's skill at talking to people with whom he disagrees, a meeting could be in the works that could bring down the heat in their contentious relationship.

As he was returning to Washington, D.C. from Mar-a-Lago on Sunday, Trump had this to say about a possible meeting with Mamdani:

The mayor of New York, I will say, would like to meet with us, and we'll work something out. But he would like to come to Washington and meet, and we'll work something out. We want to see everything work out well for New York.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said that no date has been set for a meeting between Trump and the mayor-elect.

The intense exchange of words began long before election day. Trump called Mamdani a "communist," and even endorsed former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the lead-up to election day, saying:

Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!

During his election night acceptance speech, Mamdani shot back at Trump, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up." Mamdani has said he will make New York “the strongest sanctuary city in the country,” and has stated that he would remove Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers from city facilities, and end any cooperation between local and federal law enforcement. Trump has threatened to cut off any federal funding to the city if that happens.

But aside from all of that heated rhetoric, is Zohran Mamdani figuring out that there is a hint of truth to several old sayings, such as "you can attract more flies with honey than vinegar," and maybe even more importantly, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer," might work a little better for him, and a sit down with Trump would prove to be beneficial? Mamdani has pledged some tall campaign promises to New Yorkers, like rent freezes, a $30 minimum wage, free buses, and government-run grocery stores. If he gets even half of it off the ground, he will send the very "rich" people he intends to tax to pay for it, fleeing the city, and increase the cost of most goods and services. While he may despise Donald Trump, a card-carrying Democratic Socialist is not going to turn his nose up at free government money, and Trump has demonstrated time and again that he makes good on his promises.

New York City is also Trump's hometown, and he certainly doesn't want to see it falter any more than it has, so it won't be a problem for him to make time for Zohran Mamdani. But an added bonus for Trump might be that he gets to watch another realization come over Mamdani. In the words of Margaret Thatcher, "The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money."
