First It Was 'Fat Generals,' Now Pete Hegseth Is Getting Rid of Shabby Military Barracks

Most Americans would agree that our fighting men and women in all branches of the military should have the best that we can provide for them. The best training, the best and most state-of-the-art equipment, and the highest standards are paramount for ensuring that the American military is the most lethal fighting force the world has ever seen. But what about when they are not in combat? Shouldn't the bases they are stationed at here in the U.S. be as comfortable and have a feeling of being a home away from home as much as possible? That hasn't been the case, but now something may be done about it.

On Tuesday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the formation of a new task force within the next 30 days to address the long-standing, deplorable living conditions at barracks across all branches of the military in the country. As with most things, the Biden administration failed to address the unacceptable conditions that were found and documented in a 2023 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that revealed subpar living conditions at the barracks. During the announcement, Hegseth stated, “Every warfighter of our joint force deserves housing that is clean, comfortable, and safe.”

While Joe Biden's Department of Defense claimed insufficient information about living conditions in the barracks, it didn't take much investigative work on the part of the GAO to find out just how bad things were. Their September 2023 report detailed basic health and safety issues, such as sewage overflow, inoperable fire systems, and broken windows. Photos also revealed obvious water damage and mold growth.

In early 2024, the Marine Corps inspected their bases and found similar conditions. Unsanitary, cramped quarters, appliances in disrepair, inoperable HVAC systems, and a lack of privacy were found in those inspections. Hegseth added that funding for the task force is outlined in the One Big Beautiful Bill, which Congress passed on July 4. But the question is, where were all the billions of dollars in funding the then-Department of Defense (DoD) claimed it was spending on upkeep of barracks going? The GAO found that the DoD did not reliably assess the conditions of the barracks, even though they requested $15 billion in fiscal year 2024 for "facility sustainment," but could not say how much would actually be spent on the barracks. They also did not conduct sufficient oversight. What did they know?

One Marine stationed in Washington, D.C., and speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 2024 inspection report that higher-ups should save their shocked act. He stated:

It’s been a problem for decades. It’s been a problem for as long as I’ve been in. I think that this current thing is somewhat of a stunt — acting like we didn’t know. It’s silly to think that it’s just now being a problem. Now the current commandant, the sergeant major addressing it — which I don’t think is a bad thing. I think it’s a good thing. They mean it. Why did it take 20 years, 30 years?

A Department of War Secretary like Pete Hegseth is long overdue for the American military. He recently called out "fat generals," stating:

If the Secretary of War can do regular, hard PT, so can every member of our joint force... It's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon and leading commands around the country and the world.

During his Tuesday announcement, Hegseth rightly stated, “Adequate housing for our force is critical to reviving the warrior ethos in rebuilding our military. Barracks are where warriors go to rest and recover.” For those who sign up to protect and serve our nation, it is a calling. They don't expect their living quarters to be five-star hotels. But they should expect that the toilet will flush.
