Happy April Fool's Day! When Silliness Abounds, and Even the Absurd Might Just Seem Possible

April 1, April Fool's Day. The one day of the year, perhaps other than Halloween, where jokes and pranks are the order of the day. What would April 1 be without general tomfoolery and at least one can of fake snakes that pop out when you take the lid off? Some people love it, some hate it. But the one thing we know to be true about humor, the best bit of it usually has some grain of truth to it. The Washington Free Beacon has engaged today in a pretty good bit of April Fool's satire -- so good, most conservatives would think it could almost be true.

The headline at the Beacon declares, "Biden Says His Next SCOTUS Nominee 'Will Be An Illegal Immigrant,' I Mean Undocumented.'" It's not another gem from "The Babylon Bee," in fact, someone at the Bee is probably asking himself, "Why didn't we think of that?" But again, it's that faint whiff of reality that makes this so funny. According to the "story" by the Beacon, Joe Biden declared that the next Supreme Court pick he would make would be an illegal immigrant. Biden then corrects himself in the statement and says, "Sorry. I meant to say undocumented. The next Supreme Court justice on my watch will be an undocumented immigrant of color. Oops." Because of course, diversity!

The story realistically goes on to recall Biden saying in 2020 as a candidate that he would pick a female vice president, and when Justice Stephen Breyer retired in 2022, that he would choose a black woman to sit on the nation's highest court. The Beacon was careful to include the prerequisite statement by a noted left-wing member of academia that would certainly accompany such an announcement. Whether "Cordelia Campos-Patterson, professor of Latinx studies at Yale University" is an actual person or part of the April Fool's antics is unknown, but being a committed leftist, she was all for a "newcomer" on the court. To top off the shenanigans, an actual  White House spokesman, Ian Sams, is supposedly quoted as saying that the Constitution does not mention a non-citizen on the Court. He added a snarky comment about Justice Clarence Thomas and white supremacy -- yet another hint of realism.

It is pretty easy to see why this bit of April Fool's satire could be misconstrued as an actual intention by Joe Biden. Look at the treatment of millions of illegal immigrants pouring into the country. Beleaguered Border Patrol agents are doing their best to stem the tide, but the Biden administration has seen to it that it is a losing battle. Once illegal aliens have entered the country, they are given phones, pre-loaded gift cards, and free transportation to the city of their choice. In New York City, immigrants are being housed in 5-star hotels, and Mayor Eric Adams just started a program that will give pre-paid debit cards to illegal immigrants, something that will cost the city roughly $53 million.

For many Americans, an illegal immigrant on the Supreme Court is fairly believable, given the fact that those Americans feel as if those who are breaking into the country are being treated better than natural-born citizens, and the Biden administration has no interest in stopping the flow. There is also the fact that Democrats have long floated the idea of packing the Supreme Court, usually when the court rules against them. The latest attempt came in May of 2023 as a group of House and Senate Democrats reintroduced a bill that would add four justices to the court, bringing the total number to 13.

Hats off to the Washington Free Beacon this April Fool's Day. You certainly punked me and probably many other people while leftists everywhere are no doubt thinking wistfully, "If only...."
