On Wednesday, President Trump announced his nominee for the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and there are already signs that this would be a welcome change, at least where conservatives are concerned.
President Trump shared the new pick in a post on his Truth Social account:

"Today I am honored to nominate the wonderful Dr. Heidi Overton, MD, PhD, as our next FDA Commissioner. Dr. Heidi has been a ROCKSTAR in my Administration, where she has worked directly with Secretary Kennedy, Dr. Oz, and team, to deliver on the MOST TRANSFORMATIVE Health Agenda in History," he wrote.
"She is known to take on the HARDEST issues, and bring me solutions that work best for the Country. Heidi is 'ALWAYS RIGHT,' Secretary Kennedy recently said in the Oval Office! We need her leadership at the FDA now to ensure that the U.S. remains the WORLD LEADER for Scientific Discovery and CURES," Trump continued.
Health and Human Services (HHS) Sec. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmed his strong endorsement of Overton:
A pantheon of superstar candidates made choosing our next FDA Commissioner one of the toughest decisions of my tenure at HHS. I’m confident President Trump and I chose the best person for the job: Dr. Heidi Overton.

A pantheon of superstar candidates made choosing our next FDA Commissioner one of the toughest decisions of my tenure at HHS. I’m confident President Trump and I chose the best person for the job: Dr. Heidi Overton.
Heidi brings exceptional judgment, professionalism, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the American people. I have seen her challenge assumptions, demand excellence, and turn bold ideas into meaningful results.
At the @FDA, she will make our food supply safer, modernize drug approvals, unleash American medical innovation, accelerate access to lifesaving treatments, bring greater transparency and accountability to the agency, and restore Gold Standard Science as the foundation of every decision.
Congratulations, Heidi. I look forward to working with you to restore trust in the FDA and Make America Healthy Again. 🇺🇸
"Dr. Overton was a prestigious White House Fellow in my First Term, is a Board-Certified Physician in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine, and holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Investigations from the Johns Hopkins University. She is SMART and RESPECTED by all!" Pres. Trump's announcement post continued.
"Dr. Heidi will work with Secretary Kennedy and Dr. Oz to RAPIDLY deliver on my priorities of FASTER Cures, INCREASED American Innovation, MAJOR Clinical Trial Reforms, LOWER Drug Prices, and even more MAHA WINS!" he added.
Trump ended with: "Dr. Overton will continue putting AMERICA FIRST, and creating a HEALTHY AMERICA. Congratulations to Dr. Heidi Overton!"
Also chiming in with her congrats was USDA Sec. Brooke Rollins, whose X post mentioned Dr. Overton giving up a Johns Hopkins residency to help Team Trump during the first administration:
As one of our White House fellows in Trump 1.0, who then decided to stay on the team instead of going back to her extremely impressive Johns Hopkins cancer surgery residency, I have watched her unprecedented intellect, her heart of a lion, and her humble character serve our President and our Nation in a remarkable, transformative way.
Rollins knows the new nominee well, since Overton acted as co-chair and chief policy officer of the think tank she founded, America First Policy Institute (AFPI). But there are other positive signs here for conservatives, especially her support of MAHA and strong stance against the abortion pill:
Overton is a major proponent of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” movement. Last week, she stood beside Trump when he announced an executive order to reduce and separate the childhood vaccine schedule.
[...]After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Overton celebrated the ruling, saying it “will allow Americans to reevaluate the value of the potential of every baby in the womb and choose life through a democratic process.”
She has also written articles for the AFPI that denounced abortion as “corrosive” to women and called for more controls over the prescribing of abortion pills.
As RedState previously wrote, it was on those two facets of health policy that the last FDA administrator, Dr. Marty Makary, clashed with advocates, who claimed he was slow-rolling review of the abortion drug Mifepristone.
Makary announced his resignation in mid-May after 13 months in the role.

Since nominees require congressional approval, this isn't the end of the story. Stay tuned, readers!
