'Horrific Pattern': Republican Rep.'s Bill Would Remove Any Naturalized Citizen Who Supports Terrorism

Republicans aren't just sitting idly by in the wake of recent terror attacks on Americans. On Thursday, Rep. Riley Moore (R-WV-02) said he will introduce a new bill to strengthen our nation's ability to denaturalize and repatriate naturalized citizens who support terrorism and/or commit attacks in the name of Islamist jihad.

Moore wrote in an X post:

This horrific pattern of naturalized citizens committing acts of terrorism against the American people must end.

I will introduce a bill to denaturalize and deport any naturalized citizen who:

- commits an act of terrorism

- plots to commit an act of terrorism

- joins a terrorist organization

- or otherwise aides and abets terrorism against the American people.

Here's a quick look at the "pattern" from March alone:

And others in the GOP have been working on fixing the problem for months. MO Sen. Eric Schmitt said in a Thursday post that we need to shore up the current law, which makes it "practically impossible to denaturalize these terrorists," and offered his Stop Citizenship Abuse and Misrepresentation (SCAM) legislation from Jan. as a fix:

Schmitt brought up his legislation, the Stop Citizenship Abuse and Misrepresentation (SCAM) Act, after a naturalized citizen originally from Lebanon allegedly rammed his vehicle into a Michigan synagogue and a naturalized citizen originally from Sierra Leone allegedly opened fire at Old Dominion University in separate incidents on Thursday in the latest violent attacks in the U.S. committed by naturalized citizens.

If there's any silver lining at all, it appears that the recent terror attacks on the homeland are even too much for Dems in Congress, and their Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown might not last much longer. As my colleague Rusty Weiss wrote, we've seen "[f]our terrorist attacks in the span of 12 days."

We Now Know How Many Terrorist Attacks It Takes to Get Democrats to Blink on DHS Funding

Among other long-term possibilities being offered up is this one: Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) also wrote on his X account on Thursday that he's revising a 2017 bill, the Expatriate Terrorist Act, which he'll reintroduce in the Senate next week, that "will enable the U.S. government to revoke the citizenship of foreigners who’ve committed or support terrorism."

With a possible end to the DHS funding standoff in sight, there could be time and space freed up for Republicans to enact new safeguards that will keep the American people from being little more than sitting ducks to people who hate us and our way of life.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX-26) has it exactly right:
