Another reaction that some might read as less than joyous comes from the Biden White House.

In a statement, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan signaled support for "all efforts to secure the release of hostages," and then doubled down on the administration's desire for a ceasefire. He said:

U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Saturday that the U.S. is supporting all efforts to secure the release of hostages still held by Hamas, including American citizens.

“This includes through ongoing negotiations or other means. The hostage release and cease-fire deal that is now on the table would secure the release of all the remaining hostages together with security assurances for Israel and relief for the innocent civilians in Gaza,” Sullivan said.
