I’ve been aware of Marc Lamont Hill as a long-time political contributor at CNN, but apparently, he’s weaseled his way into not only a professorship (Professor of Media Studies and Urban Education at Temple University) but a news gig at BET. Now, if what Hill does has any connection to news, then I’m Minnie Mouse. He’s one-hundred percent a radical, leftist activist who gives his opinion all day long.
The most recent example came Monday night, in a video Hill shared on Twitter. In the video, which runs just over two minutes, he chides black protesters who he claims aren’t down with the Revolution.
After repeating “Stop taking pictures with the police” twice, he not only reminds them what the protests are really about (hint: it’s not George Floyd), but he straight-up calls them fake:
“Suddenly, it wasn’t radical resistance in every area. Some of these places, it looked like a photo op for borgeois, middle-class negroes who wanted to say they were a part of a part of something. It became something that I saw on IG [Instagram], from people who don’t care about the revolution, who don’t care about radical change in the society.”
He continued, “When you’re at a protest march, don’t let the police take a knee with you. They can take a knee, but you don’t gotta [sic]….[take] a picture with them.”
So, what’s the movement’s goal, in Hill’s eyes? He makes it plain [emphasis mine]:
“Our goal right now is to abolish police. It’s to completely reimagine our social order….if you take the pictures of these cops taking knees, if you take a picture of these cops doing all kinds of warm and fuzzy, normal stuff, it sends the message that the problem isn’t the system, it’s the particular actors in the system.”
In essense, what Hill is saying is, “Don’t believe your lying eyes. If you and your community have been brought up with a respect for law enforcement, if you have come to see police as friends or even friends of the family, that doesn’t serve our Marxist, revolutionary purpose. So, cut it out or stay home!”
The problem is that it is particular actors in the system, and any contrary message floating out there is bad for anyone who might benefit from neverending protests — activists like Hill and Black Lives Matter. I fail to see how that’s anyone’s problem but his.
It’s also telling whom Hill doesn’t call out in his rant: Antifa and others who have killed police and wreaked havoc by looting and vandalizing cities across the country over the past few weeks. I guess those folks are fine with him.
Speaking of acceptable, black voices, Hill hosted a town hall on his new network Sunday night, which was billed as “a diverse panel, from politicians and academics to scholars.” The panel was made up of an Ivy League, African American Studies professor, the leader of a racial justice group … and failed politician, Stacey Abrams.
If you can stomach it, here’s the full protest advice video from Twitter:
