Dear UK, You have lost your way.

In this April 23, 2018 handout photo provided by Alfies Army Official, brain-damaged toddler Alfie Evans cuddles his mother Kate James at Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool, England. The father of a terminally ill British toddler said the child is surviving after being taken off life support, surprising doctors who had argued he should be allowed to die. Tom Evans said his 23-month-old son, Alfie, survived for six hours with no assistance, and that doctors are now providing oxygen and hydration. (Alfies Army Official via AP)

From the diaries

Dear UK,
You have lost your way and we need to have an intervention. I know we have a weird relationship. We’ve been friends as well as enemies. (I watched the entire series of TURN, so I’m an expert 😉 ).

You think we are loud and obnoxious and we think you are stuck up and naive about self-defense, but we still care about you like an older sibling. We don’t agree on much but we don’t want to have to identify your body at the morgue, so we need to have a serious talk.
You are allowing your liberal and politically correct blinders to destroy your country as well as your humanity. The case of #AlfieEvans is a prime example. (If you need a recap of Alfie and his family please read articles from my dear friend Stacey Lennox linked here:  Alfie Evans.)

Now that you’re caught up on Alfie, let’s talk about the latest news in his case. He has been denied the right to be treated in Italy, despite being officially granted Italian citizenship. His breathing tube was removed and he’s been breathing on his own since yesterday. We all acknowledge that Alfie may not be cured and could still die even if treated in Italy. There is no magic wand that is going to heal him, but that is not really the point is it?

The point is, Alfie is a human being and so are his parents and they should have more rights over his treatment than the government.
So that leaves us with a very hard truth that we all have to face. The UK is purposely killing a child in order to prop up a universal healthcare system in desperate need of repair.

If Alfie were allowed to go to Italy and live or possibly thrive when NHS has said he will not, the people would lose confidence in a system they are forced to use. There is no other reason for not allowing his parents to remove him when they have the means to do so.

Alder Hey hospital is literally going to starve and suffocate Alfie to death so that they do not have to face the fact that the system they have in place may need an overhaul.

Look I get it, you guys like universal healthcare and that’s fine but you have to acknowledge it is falling short in areas regarding parent and child rights. You need to fix it. Making headlines by killing children, as with Alfie and previously with Charlie Gard, is not helping and you’re losing everything it means to be human as well as destroying the credibility of your healthcare system all on your own.

There are other shortcomings for NHS, but the government deciding which lives are worthy of living and which are not is absolutely the most pressing.

Who will be the next set of “Alfies and Charlies” deemed unworthy of care? Will it be the kid with leukemia or the child with diabetes where costs strain the system? Does the government get to choose their lives are not worth living?

When will citizens rise up and fight this monster who is deciding which lives are worthy of care? Please, I beg you before you lose all of your humanity, stand up for Alfie. His life is worth something and it is worth everything to his parents. Even if you don’t find HIS life worth fighting for,  it could be your grandmother or your child deemed unworthy of living next. Please fight this before it hits you or your family.

With Love –
Your obnoxiously loud little sister –
The United States.
