Indiana Republican Rep. Jim Banks recently found himself in quite the pickle: Allegedly, he had a Twitter post smacked down by administrators.

The reason for Jim’s jam wasn’t wholly unrelated to the metaphor above: He’d referred to a federal official as a “man.”

As relayed by CBS News, Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Rachel Levine “[made] history” this week “as the nation’s first openly transgender four-star admiral.”

Assistant Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine made United States history Tuesday as the first openly transgender four-star officer in any of the nation’s eight uniformed services, the Department of Health and Human Services announced. The former pediatrician’s appointment also made her the first female four-star admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps’ history.

On social media, Levine — who’s never served in the armed forces — called to honor:

I am deeply honored & grateful to join the ranks of men & women across this great nation who have committed to defend the United States against small & large threats, known and unknown. I promise to uphold that trust to the fullest extent of my abilities. https://t.co/ryfwRqbAoz

As for gender identity, the United States government journeyed further.

Per an October 19th press release:

Admiral Levine now serves as the highest-ranking official in the USPHSCommissioned Corps and its first-ever female four-star admiral.

On Twitter, Rep. Jim went considerably contrarian:

“The title of first female four-star officer gets taken by a man.”

According to Daily Signal reporter Mary Margaret Olohan, the Bluebird canned the congressman’s claim concerning the “M” word.

After all — Twitter’s current Terms of Service prohibits “hateful conduct.”

Take a gander at the guideline:

You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.

Jim’s initial tweet — called “transphobic” by the Daily Beast — appears to have been removed.

However, at the time of publication, another post of his remains.

“Calling someone that was born and lived as a man for 54 years the first ‘female’ four-star officer is an insult to every little girl who dreams of breaking glass ceilings one day,” he wrote the same day.

As surmised by the Beast, Jim “played the cancel-culture card;” he issued a statement via captured image:

“My tweet was a statement of fact. Big Tech doesn’t have to agree with me, but they shouldn’t be able to cancel me. If they silence me, they will silence you. We can’t allow Big Tech to prevent us from telling the truth. When Republicans take back the House next year, we must restore honesty to our public forums and hold Big Tech accountable.”

In the United States, it’s becoming increasingly common for people to “share their pronouns.” …

These pronouns include the gender-neutral they/them/theirs — words that traditionally refer to a plural number but that today are used by some individuals who identify as gender nonbinary or who prefer not to share gender information. Other pronouns include the feminine she/her/hers and the masculine he/him/his. Some people are pioneering gender-neutral pronouns such as ze/zir/zirs. …

During his first few days in office, President Biden signed an executive order to prevent discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. …

The White House also debuted a website contact form with gender-neutral pronouns and the nonbinary prefix “Mx.” And the Department of State announced June 30 that U.S. passport forms will allow applicants to choose male or female gender, regardless of what their other documents indicate, and will eventually include an option for nonbinary, intersex and gender-nonconforming people.

Where language is concerned, it seems to me we’re inching toward an impasse. Communication is approaching “impossible” as people can no longer agree on the definitions of words.

Will “woman” and “man” be eventually eliminated? For now, they appear tilted toward either meaningless or just plain mean.

As for the State Department’s linguistic declaration, such is Taps for the term “Department.”

Similarly, the New York Board of Health has christened racism a public crisis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated similarly.

It’s done the same for “gun violence.”

To quote an old movie title, if centers and boards aimed at health are addressing social ills or taking an activist position toward the Second Amendment…and if a department intended to manage foreign policy and international relations is instead going to bat for zem, hirs, xem, and bunself…where our national interests and the focused function of our separate, taxpayer-funded agencies are concerned…who’s minding the store?

At least we know of one — Rachel Levine, first female four-star admiral of the United States.
