Return to Sender: The governor’s idea of fairness is missing a stamp of approval.

If you wanna make sure the 2020 election’s fair and square, just let everyone mail in their vote, AKA absolutely zero cheating.

Just ask Michael Moore. Here’s what he had to say about the postal process of picking president on Friday night’s Real Time with Bill Maher:

“If we make it easy for people to vote — if we don’t have voter suppression — the Republicans are gonna lose. The majority of the country does not support the Republican agenda. … The majority of the country takes the liberal/center/left Democratic Party position on most issues. … We are the majority.”

Are they?

Seems so — to Mr. Moore, “The only way Republicans can win — and this has been true for a few elections — is to cheat, is to somehow game it, rig it, do whatever they need to do.”

Well, as it turns out, some folks think that’s baloney and selection by stamp’s got “Let’s steal the presidency” written all over it.

Hence, the GOP’s suing a curiously big fan of mail voting, California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Also targeted: Secretary of State Alex Padilla.

Alex and Gavin are being served by the RNC, National Republican Congressional Committee, and California Republican Party.

As you may recall, on May 8th, Gavin’s executive order guaranteed that every registered voter in the state would receive a vote-by-mail ballot for the November extravaganza.

Alex loved it:

But Republicans weren’t fans; they’re calling it an “illegal power grab,” and I gotta say, it does seem a smidge less than optimal.

From Fox News:

Newsom’s order, aimed at allowing voters to avoid exposure to coronavirus, will send ballots to all registered voters including inactive voters. This has led to concerns that ballots sent to people who have moved or died will end up being filled out and submitted anyway unless voter rolls are inspected and cleaned out before ballots are mailed. Many Republicans have expressed concern that Democrats could try using these ballots improperly, to swing races in their favor.

Improperly?? Say it ain’t so.

Here’s how the lawsuit puts it:

In a direct usurpation of the legislature’s authority, Governor Newsom issued an executive order purporting to rewrite the entire election code for the November 2020 election cycle. This brazen power grab was not authorized by state law and violates both the Elections Clause and Electors Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

As stated by Fox, “The Republicans also claimed such large-scale mail-in voting could lead to misconduct involving third-party ballot collectors.”

The plaintiffs are seeking an injunction against the EO and a declaration that it isn’t legal.

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel thinks it’s really crappy:

“Democrats continue to use this pandemic as a ploy to implement their partisan election agenda, and Governor Newsom’s executive order is the latest direct assault on the integrity of our elections. Newsom’s illegal power grab is a recipe for disaster that would destroy the confidence Californians deserve to have in the security of their vote.”

But Alex insists it’s all about morality:

“Expanding vote-by-mail during a pandemic is not a partisan issue — it’s a moral imperative to protect voting rights and public safety. Vote-by-mail has been used safely and effectively in red, blue, and purple states for years. This lawsuit is just another part of Trump’s political smear campaign against voting by mail. We will not let this virus be exploited for voter suppression.”

Hey, he sounds like Michael Moore.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out, but it seems to me the Party of the Donkey has bigger things to worry about than making sure dead people can raise the mailbox flag for the candidate of their choice. As of only six months ’til the election, there doesn’t appear to be a Democratic candidate.

Then again, maybe that’s why Dems could do with a less-than-accurate count — as it looks right now, addled Joe Biden’s headed for the same fate as every California stamp aimed toward voterville: He’s gonna get licked.
