It’s finally happening; Star Wars is hitting the small screen in a live-action kind of way.
Years ago, then-Lucasfilm owner George Lucas announced an impending non-animated TV show that never materialized. Why not? As it turned out, in order to do it right, the series was gonna cost too much.
But apparently, now-Lucasfilm proprietor Disney’s figured out how to make it work.
So will it be any good?
I’m going to go with Yes.
My optimism’s based on two substantial things:
1) The trailer looks surprisingly great.
2) The show’s being headed up by the great Jon Favreau.
Jon is smart. His possibility-defying feat of turning Iron-Man into a cinematic titan says a lot. He’s also expressed a passion for providing quality family entertainment.
As for the trailer, enjoy:
Of course, as we’ve all seen before, trailers can be misleading.
Will the show be a WokeFest reminiscent of 2017’s The Last Jedi? That installment taught us that temporarily freeing animals is the new High Stakes of the galaxy, and some critics inferred an anti-male message.
According to one narrative, the political postulations of Last Jedi resulted in a boycott of the subsequently-flopping Solo: A Star Wars Story, which reportedly prompted the Mouse to press Pause on all future spin-offs.
A wholly different narrative goes something like this, courtesy of Disney CEO Bob Iger:
I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.
Whatever the case, I’ll be surprised if the new show uses the Force to bolster left-wing politics.
I don’t think that’s the Favreau way.
