Robert De Niro has given us some great moments. The star’s made turns in Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver, and The Godfather II not to soon be forgotten. But De Niro seems to have forgotten something: half the country is on the Right.
These days, Bob’s moves are unfortunately wince-inducing, as he insults a large portion of the crowd that catapulted him to fame.
This is what’s so crass about celebrities talking politics: stars are created by the audience; and some of them express their gratitude by biting the hand that’s fed them.
De Niro’s got some teeth.
While presenting Billy Crystal with an Icon Award at the Friars Club, Young Vito Corleone referenced his outburst at the Tony Awards earlier this year, shouting, “F*** Crystal!”
Continuing, De Niro explained, “I just get so upset with that jerkoff in the White House.”
The crowd booed. Bob responded in no uncertain terms:
“‘Boo’ is right! Down with this motherf***er!”
The actor said Billy should run for prez. After all:
“We’ve got a dangerous buffoon-in-chief. What we need is a heroic comedian-in-chief. As much as we could use you in the never-been-more-white White House, I think it’s best to keep you right where you are — making us laugh and entertaining us like no one else.”
NEVER BEEN MORE WHITE???? How “white was the Clinton White House? Carter? Johnson? Kennedy? How white is Bernie Sanders? Hillary? Or…Robert De Niro? And what’s wrong with white? Who is he? Robert Farrakhan (here and here)?
I don’t think Farrakhan’s as vulgar–
De Niro injected the National Board of Review Annual awards in January with “This f***ing idiot is the President. It’s The Emperor’s New Clothes — the guy is a f***ing fool.”
At the 2017 Hudson River Park Gala, Bob blurted, “F*** you, Donald Trump! It’s a horror with this motherf***er!”
Which, of course, culturally, roughly translates to: “F*** half of America.”
Will half the country respond similarly with their box office dollars?
He sure seems intent upon prompting it. For a reminder of what Robert De Niro thinks of you — and how far the once-great star has fallen — watch here.
He used to seem like a Good Fella. These days, he’s got the sense of decorum of a New York Taxi Driver. A bad one. I miss his days of greatness. Sadly, they don’t seem poised to return.
For those of you who can still appreciate his past work, what are some of your favorites? Let us all know in the Comments section. I’ll go with the ones listed at the top of this article, plus Meet the Parents, Raging Bull, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I look forward to reading your replies. Perhaps it’s better to remember the old good than focus on new really bad. Really, really bad.
