Trump Demands Turkey Release Imprisoned American Pastor; NBC & ABC Ignore, CBS Sides with Turkey (Plus: Roll Tide!)

On Thursday, President Trump laid down the law with Turkey: he threatened “large sanctions” for the country unless they release Andrew Brunson. Two years ago, the American pastor was charged with espionage in relation to a botched military coup.

“The United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson, a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being. He is suffering greatly. This innocent man of faith should be released immediately!”

Big story, huh?

Not to the major networks.

In their evening news programs, both NBC and ABC completely ignored the President’s efforts to liberate an U.S. citizen from a foreign entity.

CBS took a different approach: they castigated Trump for threatening a NATO ally.

Yes — it was that goofy.

Anchor Jeff Glor expressed dismay:

“President Trump tweeted today the U.S. will impose large sanctions on Turkey for detaining an American Christian pastor. That would be unprecedented action against a NATO ally.”

Ol’ Wild Man Trump, at it again.

To Glor, our coolness with Turkey is more important than saving one of our own (something tells me the Turkey punishment for espionage is a smidge harsher than, say, San Francisco’s treatment of violently felonious illegal aliens):

“The government says he was involved in a failed coup attempt in 2016. He denies it. … In his tweet, the President demanded that Brunson be released immediately. Turkey’s foreign minister tweeted back, ‘No one dictates Turkey.'”

Well, well WELL. No one puts baby in the corner, eh?

Oh yeah?

VP Mike Pence laid it out as well:

“If Turkey does not take immediate action to free Pastor Andrew Brunson and send him home to America, the United States will impose significant sanctions on Turkey until this innocent man of faith is free.”

For the time being, Brunson is on house arrest. He’s already been in a Turkish prison for two years:

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was pretty psyched about Brunson’s move to a presumably better form of imprisonment, but he also called for the minister’s release:

“We welcome long overdue news that Pastor Brunson has been moved from prison to house arrest in #Turkey, but it is not enough. We have seen no credible evidence against Mr. Brunson, and call on Turkish authorities to resolve his case immediately in a transparent and fair manner.”

Unlike the Big Three, Fox News’s Special Report covered the efforts of Trump and Pence, without the anti-Trump bent. Fill-in co-host Mike Emanuel noted, “The President made his threat today over Twitter. Vice President Mike Pence delivered the same message during a speech last night.”

The network also aired a video of Pence’s message to those turkeys:

“To President Erdogan and the Turkish government, I have a message on behalf of the President of the United States of America. Release pastor Andrew Brunson now or be prepared to face the consequences.”

Yes!

The mainstream media are curiously disinterested when Trump does something admirable or attempts to help the powerless. In May, when the President brought home three American hostages from North Korea, CNN refused to give him any credit (as covered here).

Instead, the network’s John Vause dropped this pitiful remark:

“Donald Trump believes that this success in the foreign policy field might be enough, you know, to distract attention away from the Robert Mueller investigation into Russia, the criminal investigation of his own personal attorney, you know, the Stormy Daniels affair.”

The media are shamelessly partisan. They misinform their viewers with what they say and what they don’t. Hopefully, their transparent bias has repulsed enough voters to continue Trump’s presidential victory lap with what he predicted in June (as covered here) would rage in November: a coming red wave.

Roll Tide.
