DCCC Pitch Fudging Numbers?

This morning, a reader emails us the below fundraising email from the DCCC with the note: “The DCCC is lying to their donors.”

Friend,

I was just looking over our files and I see you haven’t renewed your Democratic membership this cycle.

With the Federal Election Commission (FEC) deadline just days away, there has never been a more critical time to show your support for President Obama’s agenda and our mission to re-take the House from Tea Party Republicans.

Remember, all you need to do to update your DCCC membership is make a contribution to support House Democrats at http://dccc.org/renew.

We don’t have the Koch Brothers or right-wing secret money. We rely on your support – more than 75% of our contributions come from individual memberships like yours. This midyear FEC report is the permanent record of who was there to build our campaign from the beginning — you should be part of it.

Once we hear from you, I’ll make sure you receive your 2011 DCCC Member Card in the mail.

Thanks,

Robby Mook
DCCC Executive Director

“We don’t have the Koch Brothers or right-wing secret money. We rely on your support – more than 75% of our contributions come from individual memberships like yours.”

Leaving aside the hilarity of “right-wing secret money”, the claim is apparently untrue.

Of all the money taken in so far this year, 50% of it comes from PACS, Member Transfers, and individual donors giving over $5,000. In terms of individual donors, 35% were over $5,000. That’s based on data compiled at FEC.gov. Now, I don’t math, but it sure sounds like this “we survive only by the grace of you, the small donor” is a bit of a … fudge. Doesn’t it?

Oh and one more thing: “This midyear FEC report is the permanent record of who was there to build our campaign from the beginning – you should be part of it.”

So some day, you can look at your grandchildren and say “I was THERE!” Blech.
