Former President Barack Obama was speaking at an event about leadership in Singapore.

While trying to point out the importance of having women in leadership and saying it would be better if women ran the world, he also took a whack at “old men” who he blamed for most of the world’s problems, which he said were because of the “old men not getting out of the way.”

“If you look at the world and look at the problems, it’s usually old people, usually old men, not getting out of the way,” he said, the BBC reported.

“It is important for political leaders to try and remind themselves that you are there to do a job, but you are not there for life, you are not there in order to prop up your own sense of self importance or your own power,” the former president said.

According to the NY Daily News, Obama said of the old men, “They cling to power, they are insecure, they have outdated ideas and the energy and fresh vision and new approaches are squashed.”

It’s not hard to look at that and not think he might be sending a message to the “old men” who have been in politics “for life” who are seeking the Democratic nomination for president, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and/or his own former Vice President Joe Biden.

Particularly given that he hasn’t endorsed Biden.

Biden has claimed that he asked Obama not to endorse him, “I asked President Obama not to endorse and he doesn’t want to — whoever wins this nomination should win it on their own merits.”

That’s a little hard to believe especially given that he formally endorsed Hillary Clinton against Sanders and had reportedly pushed Biden not to run this time.

Obama also warned Biden’s campaign advisers in March to make sure the former vice president did not “damage his legacy” and met with Biden several times before the former vice president announced his presidential bid.

Obama pushed Biden on whether he would run for president again, and Biden reportedly told Obama in response that he would not be able to forgive himself if he did not try to defeat Trump.

“You don’t have to do this, Joe, you really don’t,” Obama said to Biden, a source familiar with the situation told The New York Times.

So it’s pretty clear that there’s more to it than that. Biden has said that he would uphold the Obama legacy, so it isn’t the fear that he wouldn’t. But we’ve also seen the continual Biden ‘gaffes’ and confusion which mostly ran under the radar for the time of the Obama presidency. Perhaps that’s what he meant by “damage his legacy” knowing that all would come out.

The leftist Guardian seems to think the Obama crack was more aimed at Bernie Sanders.

Some wags thought that the crack about old men with the push for more women leaders running the world may spell that Obama clearing the way for his wife, Michelle. That would certainly shake up the race. She’s repeatedly indicated she’s not interested and that doubtless would “damage her legacy” if she ran.
