Franklin Graham Wants You to Know Trump Is a Changed Man (but Let's Hope His Remaining Years Are Moral)

Another day, another so-called “faith leader” betraying his call to be salt and light to a dark world, in favor of political expediency.

Franklin Graham is being trotted out to use his name and ministry as a shield against that which is indefensible – or at least, should be, for Christians.

I wrote yesterday about Family Research Council leader Tony Perkins’ defense of Trump against what is most un-Christian behavior (attacking the weak and oppressed with his “sh*thole countries” comment, and the affair with porn star, along with the subsequent hush money payoff in 2016).

It’s like they coordinate to assure that the ruining of their witness to the world is in-sync.

And I know I’ll get the inevitable references to Graham’s work with Samaritan’s Purse.

It’s a great organization and one I’ve contributed to, often. It will not, however, be remembered or considered by many in the world who now see Graham siding with an abusive, corrupt man, out of political expediency.

If Christians and those who claim to be leaders seek to carry out the Great Commission – that is, to draw souls out of the world and tell them the Good News of Jesus Christ and salvation – latching onto an unrepentant man like Donald Trump and singing his praises is NOT the way.

The world only understands worldly things. Knowing this, those of us who have been redeemed out of this world (a place that is not our home), must walk a fine line, in order to let our light shine.

Donald Trump is a hateful, power-hungry, selfish and egotistical man. He has a long history of immoral and abusive language and behavior. He still displays that today, no matter how his Evangelical base attempts to excuse it away. Their defense of every bad thing the man does makes it seem as if his behavior has their approval.

That’s not what the world needs to see from us.

Speaking with CNN’s Don Lemon on Tuesday night, Graham showed that exact willingness to see what the Bible expressly teaches against as nothing, in comparison to the treasures stored up here on earth by having a Trump presidency.

Graham, the president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, said during the interview on CNN he’s “more interested in who a person is today” than what they were years ago.

Except nothing about how he acts today is different from years ago.

“And I believe that he’s a changed person and I’ve never seen anybody get attacked like he gets attacked,” Graham said, saying Trump is attacked by the media every day.

Cave-dwelling and cut off from all contact with the outside world from 2000 to 2009, were you?

“These alleged affairs, they’re alleged with Trump, didn’t happen while he was in office,” Graham said during the interview.

No, but they speak to the character of the man in office.

Graham also said he thinks Trump has done a lot during his first year and called for people to look at the strong economy.

“We’re all getting helped by Donald Trump’s business expertise coming into Washington,” he said.

Graham may need a refresher on kingdom-minded thinking. It appears he’s forgotten a few crucial details of God’s Word, now that he’s decided that his role is to be one of the priests of Baal.

When asked if the president should be a moral authority in the nation, he actually said, “I hope and pray that he will be a better moral authority in these next three years.”

Ok. How does that square with saying he’s a changed man, exactly? You’re suggesting that his first year, only completed last week, was immoral (and it was), and the same as he’s always lived.

Graham is like every other redcapper and clinger. He’s forgetting his place as a man called to preach the Gospel and win souls.

Or maybe he didn’t forget, so much as he found a chance to be close to power – even power that is corrupt and ungodly – to be more satisfying.

Matthew 6:24 CEB – “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be loyal to the one and have contempt for the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”
