One has to chuckle at the irony of Trump supporters who yelped about the “Russian collusion conspiracy” for so long, now buying into an actual conspiracy.

While only the MAGA red-hat-wearing contingent use the term “Spygate,” many Trump supporters buy into the foolishness that an FBI informant was some kind of Austin Powers plant. It’s a complete distraction (and stupid to boot), just as it is to make Mueller and his team out to be Democratic operatives. Thankfully, there are some cooler heads in the GOP not buying into this nonsense.

First it was Trey Gowdy and now Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr are pushing back on the Spygate silliness.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr, both Republicans, broke with President Donald Trump on Wednesday over allegations spies infiltrated his 2016 campaign, saying they agree with GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy that the FBI did “exactly” what it should have done over its handling of a confidential source.

The declarations by the leading Republicans are the latest indications that Trump lacks any evidence to back up his claims of a major political scandal he calls “spygate” — since those lawmakers were among a select group briefed on the classified intelligence at issue. The only Republican briefed on the intelligence who has yet to break from Trump is Rep. Devin Nunes, the House Intelligence chairman who has demanded more documents as part of his investigation.

“I think Chairman Gowdy’s initial assessment’s accurate, I think, but we have some more digging to do. We’re waiting for some more document requests,” Ryan told reporters at a news conference on Capitol Hill. “It would have been helpful if we got this information earlier.”
“I think that Trey Gowdy’s description of the process was correct,” Burr said

It may likely turn out there was no “collusion.” In fact, it’s become difficult to even know what that even means anymore. But Trump, who tweets every other day that collusion does not exist, continues to make it appear as if there was a grand conspiracy in the law enforcement and intelligence communities to first, prevent him from winning the presidency and now to take him down.

And in doing so, Trump and his minions are smearing Robert Mueller, a decorated Marine and Vietnam veteran and career law enforcement officer, because they don’t like that he’s merely doing his job.

Naturally, the response to Ryan and Burr will no doubt be the same as it was for Gowdy. The same guy people wanted to “draft” to be speaker several years ago, is now just some useless RINO who never got anything done, let Hillary off the hook and blah blah blah blah.

The Spygate allegations are a joke and Trump is finally getting some of the pushback that he deserves.
