Mattie is running in Jane “Wasn’t Newsweek sweet to write that about me” Harman’s seat, which is one of those seats that reminds you that ‘Democratic hawk politician’ is about as much an oxymoron as ‘conservative Democratic politician’ is. Mattie had a bit to say about that, and the seat in general:
Mattie’s site is here: I would also like to note that this particular district is heavily dependent on the aerospace and defense industries, which means of course that it’s getting hammered by this administration’s changed priorities. That makes it perhaps a little more vulnerable than one might think.

Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 8:55AM EST (link)For about 5 years (while not living there, thank God), Mattie has a very difficult job. I have never seen a bigger bunch of clueless people in my life. They all make good money in the Aerospace industry (well they did, they are taking a beating now) but are politically divorced from the tie between the policies of those they vote for and their personal lifestyle.
Since they mostly all live in <2000 sq ft houses with a paper value in excess of $500K, and hang out in the sidewalk cafes of Redondo Beach, it isn’t terribly surprising that they are so naive. Nothing has ever popped that bubble of self absorption.

Honestly, There's Not All That Much Aerospace Left in So. Cal.
IJB Friday, August 20th at 9:50AM EST (link)Those guys all decamped in the late 80s and early 90s. There’s very little defense stuff that’s still done in Cali – it’s all public employees, union goons, and pot heads out here now…
Actually not true, IJB
Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 10:34AM EST (link)There is a very active defense industry in El Segundo. That is where the satellite factories are (and in Palo Alto). It is prohibitively expensive to move a satellite factory.
However, it isn’t all that expensive to idle them, which the slowdown in space procurements has accomplished quite well.
And to think I used to listen to those idiots bitching about McCain, and their anticipation to vote for Obama. I told them numerous times they were voting for their own unemployment. Guess who is unemployed now?

IJB Friday, August 20th at 4:45PM EST (link)This makes me think of Everett, WA.
yoyo (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 9:16AM EST (link)Only for different reasons….
I wonder if that CongressCritter is polling so well. I mean, they did loose Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner plant this year. Cannot be too good for the local economy. Really, the only thing left in the place is the Navy Base, but it isn’t THAT big.
The union(s) must be PISSED! Really. Cuz, Boeing thought it less expensive to build – FROM SCRATCH – a brand new facility (including re-running roads and firming up/leveling a SWAMP) in North Charleston, SC than to stay in Everett. So why would the Union(s) be pissed? South Carolina is a Right-to-Work state with At-Will employment and low business taxes. In other words, not Union Friendly.
