White House breaks campaign promise on commercial whaling ban.

Wait, what?

Now he’s just messing with us:

The Obama administration is leading an effort within the International Whaling Commission to lift a 24-year international ban on commercial whaling for Japan, Norway and Iceland, the remaining three countries in the 88-member commission that still hunt whales.

[snip]

[Environmental] groups have run ads in major newspapers highlighting Obama’s campaign promise in 2008 to “strengthen the moratorium on commercial whaling,” adding that “allowing Japan to continue commercial whaling is unacceptable.”

Like Glenn Reynolds, I find this… bizarre.  Whatever your position on commercial whale hunting – and I will invoke the name of Ronald Reagan to justify my willingness to keep the ban in place – it’s. I. You know.  WHALES.  LIBERALS.  You would think that this would have been a really, really easy campaign promise for him to keep.  What’s next, factory farming of panda bears?  Wait, better: panda veal.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the Left went out and got their own version of what they thought President Bush was like; only, in this case it was all true

I think he has lost his mind.

What? He DOESN’T WANT TO SAVE THE WHALES?

I have no idea what anyone in the White House is thinking. This is shockingly incompetent.

He’s hoping to cut the feet out from under Sea Shepherds and their TV fame before the hoi polloi find out that the FBI has them tagged as a “terrorist group”.

Actually I have no idea what anyone was thinking in the Administration. But the FBI in the past actually has named Sea Shepherds as a terrorist group in Congressional testimony). I guess that is a plus in today’s Hollyweird/TV milieu.

Especially grilled over rice.

He's after their oil. Or does clubbing baby seals ....

get your more fuel? Hard to keep up with the aquatic fuel prospects. Either way, with the spill we need alternatives people!

More oil in the seals.
On the other hand, that’s a LOT of pounds in a whale.

ok raven, I get that we have to pound the baby seals too, but

tngal (Diary) Monday, June 7th at 10:35AM EST (link)

then can we FINALLY stop trying to harness the kelp and algae for bio fuel. Poor kelp.

Well, sure

Raven (Diary) Monday, June 7th at 11:03AM EST (link)

But I’m still going to harvest the kelp to use for lashings to hold my seal hammer together. Properly done, it’s better than hemp and survives the cold and salt-water better.

Whales Pose Threat to Off-Shore Windmills

Obama knows that if you want green energy like wind power then you have to get rid of those pesky whales before they have a chance to knock down the off shore wind turbines.
Next up will be killing of all the birds so that they don’t crap on the solar panels.

mustango (Diary) Monday, June 7th at 10:33AM EST (link)

I just got this mental image of a political cartoon depicting “the bus” with a whale under it, which, naturally, renders the bus immobile, it being 20 feet off the ground or so as a result, and a speech bubble from the bus making an obvious observation, such as, “I’m starting to think maybe we didn’t think this through.”

The Pretend President

seriously needs to see a psychiatrist.

While aggressively “changing” America as promised during his campaign, he has lied and systematically broken all his other promises to his fan base.

Socialism is an evil, and this delusional POTUS seems to be in need of professional help. His detached behavior as he goes about destroying this nation is becoming frightening.

He’s had more than enough time to prove he can’t handle the job, and now seems to be on a dangerous path – although I suppose it’s possible he may self-destruct en route.

He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke. -Psalm 104:32

Let's call him a "fake environmentalist"

jsanzone (Diary) Monday, June 7th at 1:19PM EST (link)

So far, all he’s meaningfully done in this area is push for ridiculous carbon taxes and suggest (but not act on) more domestic offshore drilling. Hardly a good environmentalist. This is totally unsurprising.

Obama clearly has no meaningful agenda when it comes to environmental preservation, only beer-pong-playing-Favreau-styled, not-so-clever-nor-thoughtful words. Only words. Only words. (When are they going to get this?)

BTW, is it any wonder Norway has so much wealth to spread around when it balks at international fishing agreements and fishes over 10x (at least) the area that most maritime countries get to? Not to mention drills oil, etc.? Between Japan, Iceland, and Norway, hell, they’ve probably laid claim to more ocean area than exists on the planet.

Obama and the Whales - Here's Why...

Wubbies World (Diary) Monday, June 7th at 2:36PM EST (link)

One thing in the news that flew under the radar is that the Japanese agreed to let the US keep its bases in Okinawa.

http://www.salon.com/wires/allwires/2010/05/27/D9FVGRU00_as_japan_us_military/index.html

In short, Obama threw the enviroweenies under the bus as a pay off to the Japanese to say ‘yes’ to the agreement. it is that simple.

When a politician is guided by political opportunism instead of principles, bad things can happen. This guy is one bad thing after another.

One Note: I am not a “save the whales” kind of person. I could care less either way. I am a “save the baby humans” kind of person though. I just know his opportunism is bad for a lot of things he hasn’t screwed up yet, and they are on the plate I am sure.

Disgraceful

fairbanks Monday, June 7th at 2:37PM EST (link)

Who even needs whatever product is extracted from whales anymore? Do they need to render the blubber for lamp oil? What an egregious lie, and to what end?

I am pretending that I never heard that the doc fix was going to be imposed later. This is because I think that the rest of you are stupid.

“… I remember you and recall you without effort, without exercise of will; that is, by natural impulse, indicated by a sense of duty, or of obligation. And that, I take it, is the only sort of remembering worth the having. When we think of friends, and call their faces out of the shadows, and their voices out of the echoes that faint along the corridors of memory, and do it without knowing why save that we love to do it, we content ourselves that friendship is a Reality, and not a Fancy — that it is built upon a rock, and not upon the sands that dissolve away with the ebbing tides and carry their monuments with them.”

They eat them

kyle8 (Diary) Monday, June 7th at 2:55PM EST (link)

Who needs Beef? or Chicken? They only hunt a few per year.

The environmentalists claim that most whale species are still endangered, but there has been no wide scale whaling in many decades. The Japanese government contends that there are a great many more whales than the enviro types say.

Since enviro types tend to lie and exaggerate, I tend to believe the Japanese Government.
