For all the talk we have heard from Donald Trump and his supporters about “changing the map” and how he would compete in usually blue states such as New York and Michigan, the reality is, Trump is getting blown out in typical toss-up states and states that usually lean Republican are moving to toss-ups.
The latest poll out of Virginia shows Hillary Clinton with a large lead over Donald Trump – one that will be difficult to overcome:
Hillary Clinton holds a commanding lead over Donald Trump in Virginia, with disdain for the Republican presidential nominee helping Clinton overcome her own vulnerabilities, a new Washington Post poll finds.
Clinton leads Trump by a 14-point margin — 52 percent to 38 percent — among registered voters in the state and by an eight-point margin among likely voters, 51 percent to 43 percent. Clinton’s edge dips to seven points among likely voters when third-party candidates are included.
Aside from the rural southwestern part of the state, Clinton’s lead spans all regions, most by a wide margin. She trounces Trump among minority voters, and slashes the advantage Republicans usually count on among whites in Virginia.
What is driving this?
It’s simple. People don’t like Hillary Clinton. But they like Donald Trump a whole lot less. Take a look:
Hillary clocks in in with 54% unfavorable rating. Trump is at 65%. The real number is that “strongly unfavorable” figure. Trump’s strong unfavorable number is higher than Clinton’s overall unfavorable.
Not good.
One Republican voter gave his view of Trump:
Walt Purnell, 71, a retired business executive from Ashburn, had hoped to vote for Jeb Bush — or John Kasich. Or Marco Rubio. Or Chris Christie. But Trump? No way.
“I think he’s a failure, I think he’s a fraud, I think he’s a con artist, I think he’s insane,” Purnell said.
Walt is not alone in how he views Trump.
In 2012, Romney beat Barack Obama in many areas in exit polls but there was one area where Romney was blown out. The trait was, “Cares about people like you.”
In 2016, Hillary Clinton would never be able to match that kind of positive with Barack Obama. But she’s running against Donald Trump and she couldn’t ask for a better gift.
