The Great Divorce

Barry & BP, not Al & Tipper

People on the right often look at corporations and this administration and see an administration hostile to the free market. Therefore, we defend the corporations.

It is natural and it should be the default. At the same time, however, we should be willing to point out the massive ties between British Petroleum and the Obama Administration.

From Rahm Emanuel to Barack Obama’s own campaign coffers to pollster Stan Greenberg — the list goes on and on and I wonder how much latitude this administration gave their friends at British Petroleum.

Couple the friendship with Obama’s refusal to want to go near the problem lest Obama own it and you have your disaster.

So, today the White House is “divorcing” itself from BP. At least that is the word the White House wants everyone in the media to use. It is White House spin regurgitated by a media trying to save Camelot 2.

Unlike most divorces, this one is coming with Eric Holder throwing around the words “criminal prosecution”? For what exactly?

Certainly if there was criminal misconduct, let’s prosecute. But if we’re going for criminal negligence, let’s remember that British Petroleum was at least doing something to try to stop the oil flow all while Barack Obama was hunkered down in the White House and at the golf course refusing to talk about it lest it become his responsibility.

That gets us to the point of the whole thing: George Bush botched the handling of Katrina. But he did not run away from Katrina. Like 9/11, George Bush took responsibility.

Barack Obama tries never to take responsibility because if he does and something goes wrong, he might, just might, get blamed.

That is not leadership. Heck, that is not even competence.

Another great divorce is coming — that between the American public and Barack Obama.

The Great Divorce?

I thought you were writing about Al & Tipper.

My subtitle didn’t show up. Will fix.

Who will stand on either hand and keep this bridge with me?

Me, too

Tip must have discovered all their houses and other ancillaries use in a couple months as much energy as the average Am. uses in a year or two or three or four and decided to get off the green wagon while it still has a couple wheels on.

More divorces than Liz Taylor

banzaibob (Diary) Wednesday, June 2nd at 9:00AM EST (link)

Obama spread his legs for Wall Street and when the roof caved in they had to divorce. Now BP has caused him problems and a divorce is imminent as well.

Add to all of this the Doctors and other groups that found out he has been cheating on them as well. They divorced after Obama wnet after them when their usefulness was over.

So ask yourself, knowing Obama’s track record do you really want to get in bed with him?

Erick, you raise an important and dcifficult issue.

As supporters of the free market, it seems to me we have to distinguish between truly private sector companies and corporate whores who survive only by corrupt dealings with the government.

The shareholders of most of the bailed out banks and auto companies should have lost their equity. Some group of creditors should be the new owners. Instead, we the people “loaned” them enough money to spare the shareholders and junior creditors the losses that they deserved. In a free market, such a provider of capital of last resort, would own the companies. Once a bank takes $25B in taxpayer money, simply paying it back with interest doesn’t change the fact that is a welfare queen on steroids.

There is a reason why government and big business are cozy. That’s how the Robber Barons of the 19th century prospered at the expense of honest competitors. It is much easier to be profitable if you have a partner who can eliminate competition. i

There is nothing more disgusting and contrary to the principles of capitalism than corporate welfare. That is NOT a left wing point of view. It is a matter of fairness and justice. How can a conservative criticize a clever welfare mom who games the system for a few thousand bucks a year, while continuing to treat GM, Citibank, and Goldman Sachs as if they were capitalist entities?

Government and big business are so thoroughly entangled that it is almost impossible to know how to react to particular situations.
The current fiasco in the Gulf is a great example of what to expect from a public/private partnership. If BP ends up being owned lock, stock, and barrel (sic) by the private citizens of the Gulf states who suffer damages, maybe it will deter future negligence by other companies who rely on a corrupt relationship with power-crazed government officials. After all, once the oil hits the fan, the government officials they thought they could rely on will show them even less loyalty than the corporate managers have shown to their own shareholders, or that the sleazy pols have shown to the voters.

We have a nation to save, people.

great points, but I still don't understand why Obama didn't

start planning for a massive prevention and clean-up operation on Day One, or at least by Day Ten to try and prevent the oil from reaching land. I still don’t see that he is doing this.

That puzzles me too

Common_Cents (Diary) Wednesday, June 2nd at 3:29PM EST (link)

I guess Obama didn’t want any responsibilty so he didn’t take action, he lawyerly points fingers to blame and does nothing. He could have had a cleanup and protection response day 1 and sent bp the bill.

He's stupid

renny (Diary) Thursday, June 3rd at 9:13AM EST (link)

Obama can’t DO anything. He is a vessel for the aspirations and projections of fools and hustlers around him. He never led a Cub Scout troop and was never an assistant manager for a Taco Bell. There is NOTHING he can actually do, and now, evidently, he is losing the ability to inspire the actions of others that have always carried him along. With the Middle East boiling and possible Armageddon there, we should all be very afraid. What happens when Egypt, the key to successful aggression against Israel, decides to take up arms again? It is already dropping its blockade of Gaza, and that means more weapons and maniacs crossing into Gaza to unleash war on Israel. What does little o do when push really comes to shove? We should be so lucky as never to find out.

Brilliant comment, mikerazar. I wish I had something to add, but I don’t.

AS A RETIRED PERSON

crankygirl Thursday, June 3rd at 10:59AM EST (link)

and a shareholder in two banks, counting on their dividends to make ends meet, I am in a position to know that SHAREHOLDERS PROFITED NOTHING from the bailouts. My BOA dividends went from $1200 a year to $21, and the share price went down one-tenth its value before it was forced to swallow Countrywide. Wachovia got bought out by Wells Fargo for cents on the dollar and dividends went to zip. I don’t see how I could have been any worse off if the feds had left them alone.

Will he be expecting alimony too… or is he planning to do without BP cash from now on?

Why Not More Reporting on Obama/BP Connection?

I think this should be the lead story everyday.

Alas, our brilliant media can’t handle the truth.

Whoever said they were married?

There were a lot of people in pre-Nazi Germany who thought they could influence/control Hitler by the money they gave him… ooopsy… and history stutters again with the O… HOPEfully with different results though…

btw – the Gores – just guessing that Tipper (the smarter one) decided it was time to grab it and go before the coming fraud lawsuits start to eat away at their essentially stolen fortune…

Divorce or double down?

edinnola Thursday, June 3rd at 9:04AM EST (link)

It has lately been exposed that BP has been a major contributor to the administration, and as such has received much favored treatment from them. Actually in pandering to really off base “tree huggers”, Obama has inadvertently caused a tremendous environmental disaster. Obama’s offices (not any Bush hold-overs) approved the BP deep water well, and ONLY the BP deepwater well, while suspending shallow water drilling as well as any other sensible drilling. Not only that, is was responsible for all the “oversight” of the drilling, and that includes the testing, most of which was reportedly “gun decked”, of the BOP and virtually all of the procedures including accident precautions and responses. Yep this one is Obama’s. His “plan” is to let BP take care of it. What an airhead.

The non-existent “clean-up” is an entirely n’other story. The guy’s a day, or forty late and a dollar short. The lack of response is a lack of caring as well as total inability of the Obama administration to “ACT”. Do you now see ONE of the reasons that government control of anything (like healthcare) just DOES NOT WORK. And I hear that Obama is planning on pushing for his “energy” bill on the heels of his oil disaster. Do you think “tar and feathers” would be appropriate here.

Praise

Imagine my non-surprise when President Obama praised Al Gore on
his long marriage.
I am grateful President Obama doesn’t know me.

Geo Bush did not screw up Katrina.

Federal Law prohibits the Federal Government from interfering in State matters without an invitation from a state authority.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco (D) refused to contact the Federal Government when she should have done so. The result was a major delay in the presence of Federal assistance.

Mayor Ray Nagin (D) refused to ask for federal Assistance, and in addition parked over 300 School buses in a low spot that ultimately resulted in these buses being submerged and water damaged. These buses could have been used to transport many of those who died to safety, but Nagin refused to use his authority to place saving lives ahead of the chauffer license law and killed over 300 people by refusing to transport them.

Don’t blame this on Geo. Bush. He may have screwed up a lot, but the Katrina-New Orleans disaster belongs solely to the Democrat Governnor of LA and the Democrat Mayor of New Orleans.

"A 'Fitting' Solution"

myron_j_poltroonian Thursday, June 3rd at 3:55PM EST (link)

British Petroleum could save a lot of legal grief if it just turned over a controlling interest in itself to the “New Black Panthers”. See? Problem swept under the rug. “Nothing to see here. Move along.” Oh, yes – “Blame Bush”.
