'Uncertain' Trump? Nah. He Just Wants to Have His Pence and Hate Him, Too

There are two possibilities for the reason that we hear in the news that Donald Trump was up late agonizing over the selection of Gov. Mike Pence as his VP and on the phone looking for “a way out.”

The first, outlined here by streiff, is that his campaign is bumblefudge and his incompetent leadership has led to a place where he’s getting boxed into corners by his staff. Erick Erickson has more on that theory here, as well.

Streiff’s post also explains the mechanics of how we found out.

But there is a second possibility.

Why would Ann Coulter need an out? Well she and her ilk are desperate for any reason to prove how awesome Trump is and how great they are for knowing how awesome he is. But selecting Pence, whom they view as a traitor on immigration, sent despair among them. Remember these?

Yeah. There are many more like it from the Twitter-sphere of that persuasion. What is a Trump-bot to do?

Only now they have the perfect out. “Oh, well he didn’t want Pence, he was forced to take him.” No longer is it a betrayal of the “virtues” for which they so adore him. Instead it’s that evil Washington game. Exactly what he’s going to fix if he’s elected.

That is mighty fine convenience right there. And all he has to do is just … leak it. Leak that he didn’t want Pence. Simple.

Ask yourself which thing would Trump rather his voters think about him: He can’t be trusted on immigration? Or his team betrayed him because D.C. is corrupt? Seems like an easy spin choice to me. And you don’t have to be particularly sharp to come up with it, either. Which works out great for him.

Granted, it totally undercuts his “Who’s the Boss” persona, but that is a small sting when you can just blame it on The Man. This way he doesn’t suffer with the rabid part of his base for a choice they can’t tolerate, while still collecting the kudos and increased confidence of the Paul Ryan set for picking Pence. That’s a pretty good deal, all around.

You gotta give a bit to get a lot in a good deal. Surrender a little bit of the “master and commander” but retain the “he hates Mexico” vote? Easy choice.

Just a theory. Could easily be wrong. But it sure fits. Of course, so does disarray. But you know what else? The Ann Coulter set will use it as their excuse for him whether that’s what he intended or not.
