When it comes to the whole question of "gender-affirming surgery," there's an argument to be made that adults, presumably those able to give informed consent, might seek out and obtain these treatments. There's also an argument to be made that any physician who offers such procedures has a serious ethical problem in violating non pimum nocere, in that they are carving up perfectly healthy tissues, but that's an argument for another article.
With children, though, that's another story, as a "transgender woman," one Rose Inessa-Ethington, has learned, after taking his 10-year old son to Cuba, allegedly to seek gender-reassignment surgery there. Now, Inessa-Ethington and his partner, Blue Inessa-Ethington, are in the pokey, facing possible kidnapping charges.
A transgender woman and her partner were arrested Monday for allegedly kidnapping her 10-year-old son and flying him to Cuba – where the child’s biological mother feared he would undergo reassignment surgery.
Rose Inessa-Ethington, 42, and her female partner, Blue Inessa-Ethington, purportedly took the kid under the guise of going on a camping trip in Canada, the US Attorney’s Office said in a Tuesday press release.
Instead, they set their sights on Cuba, where family members feared the youngster would undergo “gender reassignment surgery prior to puberty,” the release said.
Cuba does offer these treatments, and has for some time, but only to Cuban citizens, and only for adults.
The child self-identified as a girl in interviews with officials – which family members worried was “due to manipulation by Rose,” according to the feds.
This is like someone claiming to have a "vegan cat." Cat or child, you know they weren't the ones making the decision. In this case, the child, unnamed for obvious reasons, is now with his mother, who was awarded full custody on April 13th. Before that, the biological parents had shared joint custody.

Presumably since this is a case that crosses state and national boundaries, the FBI and DOJ are now involved. The DOJ issued a press release on the matter on Tuesday.
Rose Inessa-Ethington aka Eri Ethington, 42, and Blue Inessa-Ethington, aka Carly Ann Crosby, 32, both of Cache County, Utah, were deported from Cuba on Monday with the assistance of the FBI. Upon landing in the United States, the two defendants appeared in court for an arraignment in Richmond, Virginia, and will be transported to the District of Utah at a later date for the remainder of their court case at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.
According to court documents, on March 28, 2026, a 10-year-old child was supposed to be traveling by car to Calgary in Alberta, Canada, for a planned camping trip with the minor victim’s biological father Rose Inessa-Ethington, Rose’s partner Blue and Blue’s 3-year-old child. But the group never arrived at their hotel in Calgary or the campground they planned to stay at from March 29 – April 2, 2026. As alleged, the group had not been heard from since March 28, 2026, when the 10-year-old told the biological mother via telephone they arrived in Canada. The biological mother shares custody of the 10-year-old with Rose, her former spouse. On April 3, 2026, the child was supposed to be returned to the biological mother after the camping trip to Calgary, according to the court ordered custody agreement, which did not occur.
According to court documents, on March 29, 2026, the group crossed the U.S. Canada Border and took a flight from Vancouver, Canada to Mexico City, Mexico. On April 1, 2026, the group took another flight from Merida, Mexico to Havana, Cuba. Mexican immigration authorities confirmed their arrival and departures utilizing their U.S. Passports. As alleged in court documents, interviews with the 10-year-old’s family provided significant concerns for the minor’s well-being, as the child was born male, however, identified as a female child, which family members largely believed to be due to manipulation by Rose. Concerns existed that the child was transported to Cuba for gender reassignment surgery prior to puberty. On April 13, 2026, a Utah State Court ordered the 10-year-old to be returned to the child’s mother immediately and granted the mother exclusive custody of the child. On April 16, 2026, Cuban law enforcement located the group in Cuba.
Under 18 U.S.C. § 1201, they face a maximum 20-year prison term.
To call this child abuse is a gross understatement. These two, one of whom was a biological parent, apparently had the intention of subjecting a 10-year-old boy to treatments and surgeries that are debilitating, permanent, irreversible, and life-altering. If they had succeeded in their intent, the boy's life would have been forever changed, with no hope of a normal life, with no chance at children of his own, with no chance at anything even approximating a normal sex life. All this, for a child years short of being able to give informed consent, and too young to even understand what would have happened to him — or why his father was pushing him into it.
Twenty years doesn't seem quite long enough for someone who would force such a harsh future on their own child.
