Up here in the Great Land, we are nowhere near tired of winning yet. Market prices for gold and silver are rising, and while that may have mixed effects on some aspects of the financial markets, it's pretty great for Alaska miners. The output of Alaska's mines shot to new heights in 2025.
In the 2026 edition of its Mineral Commodity Summaries, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that Alaskan mines and quarries produced more than $6.4 billion worth of non-fuel minerals – gold, zinc, silver, lead, and aggregate products – last year.
When you add in the roughly 1 million tons of coal produced to fuel in-state power plants, the total value of all the materials extracted at Alaska mining operations during 2025 comes in at around $6.5 billion, a roughly 38% jump over the $4.8 billion worth of mined commodities produced in America's Last Frontier during 2024.
While lower zinc output at Red Dog trimmed base metal value, record-setting precious metal prices more than compensated. With strong gold and silver markets carrying into 2026, Alaska's mining sector appears positioned for additional gains this year.
This same report also brings us a cautionary note, however:
Longer-term growth, however, will depend less on metal prices and more on bringing the next generation of mines into production.
This next generation of Alaska mine growth begins with:
- Red Dog Mine Life Extension – an initiative by Teck Resources to develop new mines north of current operations.
- Donlin Gold – a mine project in Southwest Alaska that could single-handedly double Alaska's gold production.
- Graphite Creek – a mine project north of Nome that hosts the largest known deposit of graphite in North America.
- Arctic – A high-grade copper-zinc-lead-gold-silver mine project in the Ambler Mining District.
Note that these are projects that the Trump administration has been pushing; we already saw the ongoing, fast-tracked approvals for the Ambler Mining Road, which will make that remote mining district more profitable.

This is good for Alaska - and for America. These mining projects won't just give us access to gold and silver deposits, but also rare earth metals, a lot of which we are now getting from China - a country, if you'll forgive me for belaboring the obvious, isn't exactly a close ally.
While the Arctic mine development timeline is dependent on several factors – road construction, permitting, and financing – the federal government's interest and support are expected to streamline the process.
"This is something that should have been long operating and making billions of dollars for our country and supplying a lot of energy and minerals," President Trump said when signing the Ambler Road executive order.
These projects are followed by a deep pipeline of Alaska mine projects slated to deliver billions more dollars' worth of antimony, cobalt, copper, gallium, germanium, gold, silver, zinc, and other minerals critical to the economic well-being of Alaska and the nation.
If current price strength holds and incremental production gains materialize, total mineral production value could again challenge record levels in 2026 – with the next chapter of Alaska mining growth increasingly tied to projects advancing their way through the exploration and development pipeline.
Need another reason that the midterm elections this year are critical? (Yes, I'm going to keep hammering this point at every opportunity.) Should Democrats regain control of, well, anything, they will spare no effort to stop all this. They will spare no effort to return Alaska to being as they prefer it, a gigantic national park, where the vast mineral and energy wealth of the Great Land stays where it is, deep in the planet's crust. They will shut down these projects, shut down all the jobs that go with them, and return us to full dependence on China for a range of strategic minerals.
We're not tired of winning. Let's make sure we never have the chance to become tired of winning.
