NYC Gets Its First Free Grocery Store - What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

The feather merchants are at it again; a new business model is coming to the streets of New York City, and it's one that probably has the new socialist communist Mayor Zohran Mamdani shuddering with glee. Of course, like most loony left ideas, it won't work, but they're going to try it anyway: A free grocery store. As in, no payment. As in, take everything you want.

This won't end well.

A prediction market company best known for allowing users to bet on world events is stepping into New York City’s food scene — if only briefly — with the launch of what it’s calling the city’s first-ever free grocery store.

Polymarket will be open for New Yorkers in Lower Manhattan starting at 12PM from Feb. 12 through Feb. 16, according to the NYC for Free website. It’s being described as the city’s first free grocery store, "fully stocked" and requiring no purchase.

Polymarket posted on X, Tuesday, that the idea took "months of planning." In addition to paying for the lease, the company said it had donated $1 million to Food Bank For New York City to support "an organization that changes how our city responds to hunger."

I can pretty much promise you that no one in New York is starving. Not when the single biggest health problem plaguing people below the poverty line in the USA is obesity. No, not one single person in New York is starving. We have, here in the United States, some of the most generous food assistance programs in the known universe, and people are literally growing fat on it.

Photos on social media show the market offering a variety of food staples — from produce, milk, eggs and bread to brand-name snacks such as Pringles, Sour Patch Kids and Oreo cookies.

Polymarket did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on why it is opening what it calls the city’s first free grocery store.

A look at Polymarket's X account presents you with what is purportedly an image of this store, although I wouldn't rule out that being AI-generated.

Now, predictions are hard to make, especially about the future, but I'll chance one here: This will fail, catastrophically. The first free grocery is set to open on Thursday, and will remain open through Monday. So, over the weekend. Here's my prediction: A horde will descend on this place on Thursday, take everything that isn't nailed down, including possibly the shelving and fixtures. There will be fights; there may well be a riot.

This has to be the worst idea since New Coke. It is, however, a fantastic display of leftist ideology completely and utterly unfettered by anything approaching good sense, as well as lacking any semblance of understanding as to how all too many people in the decaying, worm-ridden Big Apple are going to react to this. The shout will go out - indeed, it already has, since Polymarket seems determined to spread the news - "Free stuff!"

That's all it will take. Let the games begin.

Polymarket is supposedly a prediction market company - a bookie, in other words. It's rather surprising they can't predict the near-certain outcome of this lunacy.

Stay tuned - this is sure to get entertaining.
