Trump to Raytheon: Step Up Now or Step Out

Earlier on Wednesday, we saw that President Trump was intending to crack down on exorbitant salaries, bonuses, stock buybacks, and dividends from American defense contractors, insisting that they instead focus their resources on new production and new facilities.

That earlier shot across the bow was aimed at the industry in general:

Now, President Trump has unleashed a broadside at one company in particular: Defense contract giant Raytheon.

The President's post, which appeared originally on his Truth Social platform, reads:

I have been informed by the Department of War that Defense Contractor, Raytheon, has been the least responsive to the needs of the Department of War, the slowest in increasing their volume, and the most aggressive spending on their Shareholders rather than the needs and demands of the United States Military. Raytheon seems to think this is the Biden Administration, and this is “business as usual,” IT’S NOT! Either Raytheon steps up, and starts investing in more upfront Investment like Plants and Equipment, or they will no longer be doing business with Department of War. Also, if Raytheon wants further business with the United States Government, under no circumstances will they be allowed to do any additional Stock Buybacks, where they have spent Tens of Billions of Dollars, until they are able to get their act together. Our Country comes FIRST, and they’re going to have to learn that, the hard way!

Once again, this will require a reworking of contracts. But that's do-able.

These companies are, we hasten to note, not like the other big corporations that make up much of the nation's economy. This isn't like Washington making demands on, say, Walmart, about their executive compensation, much as Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and her ilk would love to do that. No, this is a defense contractor, paid by taxpayer dollars, and the buyers for their products are the citizens of the United States of America, specifically the War Department, which is under the control of the president. He is, in effect, renegotiating a deal between a buyer and a seller; we, the people, are the buyers.

This remains a developing story. Stay tuned!
