Unseen Chinese Claws in Every Call: Massive Hacking Attack Exposed

In the latest episode of "China is not a close friend of the United States," on Sunday, we learned that a Chinese state-sponsored cyberattack may have affected many, perhaps most Americans, from President Trump right down to regular folks across the fruited plain.

This was audacious; it was carefully planned and executed, and it may still be ongoing.

A former FBI official claims that it's likely every American has been impacted by a Chinese-state-sponsored cyberattack.

International law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and National Security Agency, issued a joint advisory in September warning the public that CCP-sponsored actors are "targeting" many aspects of American lives, including telecommunications, government, transportation, lodging and military infrastructure networks.

The cyberattack wasn't limited to the U.S. and targeted many countries around the globe, according to the advisory. According to the international agencies, the three Chinese companies believed to be behind Salt Typhoon work for China's intelligence services, which include units in the People’s Liberation Army and Ministry of State Security.

So, this would be a cyber-attack conceived and approved at the very highest levels of the Chinese government; that is to say, the Chinese Communist Party. And this is a manifestly unfriendly act.

This isn't the first such incursion linked to China in recent months.

New Cyberattack May Be First Large-Scale AI-Driven Espionage Effort

What's interesting about this attack is that it included what was basically a population-wide wiretap. What could China gain by listening in on the phone conversations of ordinary Americans? That's not clear, but that seems to be what may have happened.

Pete Nicoletti, chief information security officer at Check Point, told Fox News Digital that those behind the Salt Typhoon cyberattack had unprecedented access to phone calls being placed by Americans.

"They had full rein access," Nicoletti, said. "So, you know, your grandmother calling you to remind you to pick up groceries was not a targeted person and they're gonna listen into that call. But Trump, Vance, Kamala Harris, and dozens of other U.S. government officials were specifically targeted."

Nicoletti said the Salt Typhoon hackers "established a foothold and exfiltrated data for five years," which is "almost unprecedented."

We should note that not even a nation as populous as China has enough people to monitor the phone calls of a few hundred million Americans, so any such monitoring would by necessity be focused, but the people that they seem to have access to are alarming: Current and former elected officials, right up to and including the president and vice president.

If China had anyone listening to Kamala Harris's telephonic word salads, it seems that would qualify them for hazardous duty pay.

If anyone needed a reminder that China is the United States' primary geopolitical rival, this should do the job. With this, with recent AI-directed cyberattacks, with the purchase and occupation of agricultural lands strangely located near major U.S. military bases, China seems to be engaging in intelligence-gathering on a vast scale.

As to what purpose China might have in gathering intelligence on the United States, I think we can presume the worst. China is a nation with a long, long history. They have historically thought in the long term, not in terms of decades, but centuries. But as I'm continually pointing out, they no longer have that luxury. The Middle Kingdom is facing a major demographic crisis. They may well be running out of time; if they are going to act, they have to act within the next couple of decades.
