Now, This Is Too Much - Scientists Call for Ban on Bacon

There's an old internet meme going around that depicts a plate of bacon and eggs, with the caption, "They say every strip of bacon you eat takes six minutes off your life. If that were true, I'd have died in 1788." I don't know as I've eaten quite that much bacon in my life, but I've sure had some, and will probably have quite a bit more. Bacon is meat candy; it's a gift pigs give us when we're good.

So, of course, some people are trying to take it away.

Scientists are calling for a ban on supermarket bacon and ham after the chemicals used in their production were linked to more than 50,000 bowel cancer cases. The Mail has more.

A coalition of leading scientists says the refusal to ban nitrites – preservatives used to keep processed meats pink and long-lasting – has come at a devastating human and financial cost, with the NHS footing an estimated £3 billion bill to treat preventable cancers over the past decade.

Their analysis, based on figures from Cancer Research UK and the British Journal of Cancer, estimates that around 5,400 bowel cancer cases each year in the UK are caused by eating processed meats. Treatment costs for each patient average £59,000.

The warning comes exactly 10 years after the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen – placing it in the same risk category as tobacco and asbestos.

As my British friend might say - bollocks.

I might point out that what the Brits or even the Canadians call "bacon" isn't the wondrous strips of smoky magnificence we Americans regularly see on our breakfast plates. Just as we had to show the Brits and Canadians how to do government right, we also had to show them how to do bacon right, and it's a tad baffling that they don't seem to have absorbed either lesson.

But as for diet, the only possible reply to this kind of meddling is "I'll eat what I like, thanks very much."

As for the flaws in the study cited:

First they came for sugar, then they came for bacon. Will life be worth living once all the simple ‘unhealthy’ pleasures are banned? I haven’t read the study, but a first thought is whether people who eat lots of bacon aren’t unhealthy in other ways that might explain a higher incidence of bowel, breast and prostate cancers. That’s often the problem with these studies – there are so many potential factors that could explain an 18% increase in various maladies. They’ll have statistical techniques to try to deal with that, for sure. But trying to work out why diseases like cancer develop as a result of eating certain foods is never an exact science.

That's as may be, and likely true; this isn't really science so much as activism, masquerading as science. We've seen a lot of that in recent years.

I won't speak for the Brits and what they call bacon, but here in the Land of the Free, that just isn't going to fly. We're Americans, we love our salty breakfast meats, and I think I can safely speak for the majority of American diners when I say, "You can have our bacon when you pry it from our cold, dead hands." Bacon and eggs, bacon cheeseburgers, bacon bits on salads - we love our bacon, and aren't about to give it up. I'll have bacon on bacon with a side of bacon, if I like, and nobody better try to tell me otherwise.

Some people are always trying to suck all the joy out of life. But this - calling for a ban on bacon - that's just one step too far.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
