California's Largest High School District Declares 'Girls Only in Girls' Sports'

The Kern High School District is California's largest, both in enrollment and in area. Kern County, which includes the district, makes up much of the southern portion of California's Central Valley, including the Bakersfield metropolitan area. It's also Trump country; in the 2024 election, Donald Trump wiped Kamala Harris out in Kern County by a margin of over 20 points.

So it's not a big surprise that the Kern Valley High School District has voted to restrict girls' sports teams to actual girls.

The biggest high school district by enrollment and land area in the state of California voted 3-2 to adopt a Title IX resolution that would only allow female students in girls' sports, on Monday.

The vote comes as the state's educational agencies face a lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice for alleged Title IX violations by allowing biological males to play in girls' sports.

Kern High School District regularly enrolls more than 40,000 students and employs more than 1,700 staff per year across its 31 schools. Now, it becomes the 16th school district, individual school or board of education in California to adopt an amendment to comply with Title IX, rejecting the current state policy that protects trans athletes in girls' sports.

California's Governor has been decidedly fuzzy on the subject, stating at various intervals that the practice was "unfair" (something of an understatement, that) and yet defying the Trump administration's interpretation of Title IX as forbidding any but actual girls to play in girls' sports.

This would seem to be spreading across the once-Golden State:

The resolution was authored by Chino Valley Unified School District Board of Education President Sonja Shaw. Shaw's district is one of the 16 in California to also pass a resolution on the issue.

"I authored this resolution to be the voice of our communities — to stand with our girls and protect the truth that should’ve never been silenced," Shaw said. "Boys are boys. Girls are girls. God made them beautiful just the way they are. It’s time to put fairness, truth, and common sense back into education."

This is as it should be, and we might take this as another sign of sanity returning to this issue. Not only are resolutions like this gaining ground, but some girls teams are taking much more direct action by refusing to participate in any game against a team with a male member.

That, in truth, is the nub of the issue here. These are not girls, transgender or otherwise. It doesn't matter how they "identify." They can claim to identify as a baked potato if they like, but that won't fit them out with butter, sour cream, and bacon bits. These are boys; they are identified as boys, they have the XY chromosomes of boys, and all of the physical advantages that go with that. And I remain skeptical in the extreme that any of them genuinely suffer from gender dysphoria. It's far more likely that they are taking advantage of a social contagion to cheat, to gain a prominence they couldn't gain against other boys.

That's the reality. That's the fact. It's a shame that school districts and girls' and women's sports teams around the country are having to go to these levels to finally bring an end to his lunacy, but at least we seem to be turning the corner.
