While Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is buzzing around the country in a carbon-spewing private jet, engaged in her "Fight Oligarchy" tour alongside the daffy old Bolshevik from Vermont, her district is awash in crime. One neighborhood in particular is experiencing an eyebrow-raising 70 percent increase in crime and gang activity, and AOC hasn't shown her face there:
What these neighborhoods really need is a “Squad” car.
Major crime rose by an eye-popping 70% in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx and Queens district since the ‘defund the police’ socialist lawmaker took office in 2019 — more than double the citywide increase of 30% over that same span, a Post analysis of NYPD data shows.
The 110th Precinct in Queens, which covers part of the infamous “Market of Sweethearts”human-trafficking and prostitution mecca on Roosevelt Avenue, saw a 105% surge, the highest increase of any NYC precinct in that period.
Major crimes consist of murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and auto theft.
Now, let's be fair about one thing: These are local issues, generally handled by municipal police and local prosecutors. But responsibility isn't the point here; it's her job, which is supposedly representing the people of her Congressional district, not grandstanding around the country to set herself up for (presumably) a presidential run at some point. And at least one of her constituents is growing vocal about AOC's failure to do her job:
Warning: coarse language
“She’s not doing s–t. She doesn’t live in the neighborhood, she doesn’t care,” vented Elmhurst resident Guadelupe Alvarez, who has lived in the 110th Precinct her whole life and is one of several constituents who ripped the jet-setting absentee “Squad” member for letting the district turn to “trash” while she focuses on elevating herself on the national stage.
Alvarez, 34, a former AOC supporter, has had to endure a brothel setting up across the street from her childhood home, and the drunken men she says constantly swarm in and out of the place. She said she also regularly witnesses gang activity, car thefts and assaults, but nothing gets done.
She used to dream of building a life in the neighborhood, but not anymore.
Can we really blame her?

Here's a suggestion for Ms. Alvarez: Start weighing a primary challenge. The issue to run on is right there before you: Law and order in this district, and particularly in the 110th Precinct and Roosevelt Avenue. AOC successfully primaried the sleepwalking Joe Crowley by burning up a lot of shoe leather and shaking a lot of hands, and we should (reluctantly, but even so) give her credit for that. But Guadalupe Alvarez is now in a position to do the same to AOC.
It's fair to point out that a Congresswoman Alvarez would, on most issues, be indistinguishable from AOC. That's not as big a deal as we might think; we were never going to suddenly get a MAGA Republican from New York's 14th District. If someone like Guadalupe Alvarez won a long-shot primary challenge against one of the "progressive" left's darlings over a local issue like this, it may well serve as a wake-up call for some other grandstanding urban Democrats to take a good hard look at what's going on in their district - and to start doing their jobs and representing their district.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, as we've noted several times before, is ignoring the people who sent her to Washington. She is instead grandstanding, enjoying the legacy media attention, and seemingly setting herself up for higher office. A serious challenge, even one that she wins but that made her respond to voters in her district, may help focus some of her attention back on the peopel who sent her to Washington in the first place; and if there's anyone in Washington who deserves more of a "dance with the one who brung ya" message than AOC, I'm not sure who it is.
