It seems to be the hallmark of our times that entire states will fight to maintain hideously unfair and unpopular practices. This is likely the primary reason that the Democratic Party's approval ratings are somewhere between toenail fungus and typhoid fever. But too many of these "progressive" jurisdictions seem inclined to keep up the fight.
And the most egregious example of this, the most hideously unfair practice that "progressive" jurisdictions seem determined to keep in place, is allowing boys who claim to identify as girls to compete in girls' sports. The Trump administration is trying to squash this practice, and is meeting resistance at every turn.
One of those jurisdictions, the state of Washington, is now the target of a federal investigation, and one Washington family is glad to see it coming.
A family in East Wenatchee, Wash., at the center of the controversy surrounding transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports, tells The Center Square they are reenergized now that the federal government has launched an investigation into the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
On Wednesday, the U.S. departments of Education and Justice announced their Title IX “Special Investigations Team” joint initiative, alleging that the state’s public schools agency has imposed gender-inclusion requirements on school districts in possible violation of federal law. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to ban transgender athletes from competing in women's and girls' sports
Ahnaleigh Wilson, 15, who is about to finish her freshman year at Eastmont High in East Wenatchee, came in second place at the Cashmere Junior Olympics regional track meet 1,600-meter race on May 18, 2024, losing to a transgender athlete from a different high school.
She and her parents have since been very vocal about the disadvantage they say biological females face in competition against biological males.
The disadvantages are many and undeniable. Boys have many physical advantages over girls. Muscle mass, fast-twitch muscle fibers, bone length and strength, cardiac and pulmonary capacity - every single physical attribute that has to do with strength, speed, and stamina is in favor of boys.
These are facts.
Also, I will maintain, as I always have, that it's unlikely in the extreme that any of these "transgender girls" are really suffering from gender dysphoria. Even if they are, the unfair physical advantage remains, but it's more likely that these boys are mediocre male athletes who have seized on the notion that they can claim to "identify" as a girl and suddenly start winning titles and breaking records.
Biology should determine this, not social contagions or fraud. A boy can identify as a ham sandwich, a pipe wrench, or the Horsehead Nebula, and that doesn't make it true.

The state of Washington has replied:
Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal pushed back on the federal government’s announced investigation.
“My job as the leader of this constitutional office is to communicate, uphold, and enforce the law,” he emailed The Center Square. “My office will enforce our current laws as we are required to do until Congress changes the law and/or federal courts invalidate Washington state’s laws. Unless, and until that happens, we will be following Washington state’s laws, not a president’s political leanings expressed through unlawful orders."
To Superintendent Reykdal, I can only say this:
Your job, Mr. Reykdal, may well be to enforce the law of the state of Washington. But that law is cruelly unfair to the female athletes of your state. Are you completely unaware of the facts of basic human biology? Are you completely unaware that humans exhibit a fair degree of sexual dimorphism, and what that means? Are you unaware of the fact - yes, the undeniable fact - that men and boys are larger, stronger, faster, have more stamina, and are more resistant to injury than women and girls? Do you now see how cruelly unfair your states' laws are to girls and women?
Sir, an honest man, a man of conviction, would refuse to enforce these cruel and unfair laws. An honest man, a man of conviction, would stand up for what is right. That you have not done so speaks volumes about your character. That the State of Washington passes these laws speaks volumes about the government of this state.
The Trump administration is determined to ring down the curtain on this stupidity. For the sake of Ahnaleigh Wilson and many, many like her, we should hope they succeed.
