I'll say it again: What the government - any level of government - does for anyone, it must do for everyone, or it must do for no one. That's equal treatment under the law, and in some blue states, it's a dead letter. One of those blue states is Washington, where Governor Bob Ferguson has now signed into law an idiotic policy to award down payments averaging $120,000 to first-time black homeowners. The new law doesn't require any proof of housing discrimination; it seems just being "black" is enough.

This is another example of the usual leftist “I want the government to take money away from group A and give it to group B.” Well, presumably white people are group A, and black people are group B. This is political malfeasance of the first order. It's racist. It's actually discriminatory. It violates the founding principle of equal treatment under the law, and no, past violations of that principle do not excuse further violations.

And, as you might expect, I have some questions.

First: How are we defining "black?" What percentage of "black" ancestry must one have? Will a person who emigrated from Ghana last week qualify? Are we requiring some kind of minimal level of "black" ancestry, or is the old Jim Crow-era "one drop rule" applying?

Second: Is this available to anyone who, through whatever means, qualifies as "black?" Does a Harvard-educated attorney living in Seattle and making upper six-figures a year qualify for this payout because he's "black?" In other words, will this thing be means-tested?

Third: Who's picking up the tab for these payouts? Oh, I know - the taxpayers of the state of Washington. But here's the thing: Are black taxpayers paying extra taxes to pay for these reparations payments, having their pockets picked on the one hand to get a payout on the other? Or will only white (Asian, Native American, you name it) people have to foot the bill?

There is so much stupidity here that it would take weeks to unpack it all.

Here's the other problem: This will make housing prices in already-expensive coastal Washington skyrocket. When you dump that much money into a market, then prices will go up. That's Price Theory 101, but then, economics has never been a strong point among leftists.

This is political pandering. It's economically and constitutionally unsupportable. It's racist. It's unfair discrimination. And it will make housing in Washington ever more unavailable to regular folks. In a fair world, in a sane world, the pols who wrote this abomination and the governor that signed it into law would be ridden out of the state on a rail, covered in tar and feathers.
