The White House, after some delay, has finally named the person who is the current administrator of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE.) That person is Amy Gleason, whose background is largely in healthcare administration, but who went to work for the United States Digital Service (USDS) in — you guessed it — January of 2025. The USDS was converted to the DOGE by President Trump via executive order.
The White House revealed Amy Gleason as the DOGE administrator on Tuesday.
A White House official confirmed to The Hill that Gleason is serving in an acting capacity. Gleason is a former official at the U.S. Digital Service, which Trump rebranded as DOGE via executive order.
Questions swirled over who was formally in charge of DOGE after the White House said in a court filing last week that Elon Musk is technically not part of the agency, even though the tech billionaire is said to be leading its sweeping cost-cutting efforts.
Musk is an employee of the “White House Office” and serves as senior adviser to the president, according to a court filing from Joshua Fisher, director of the White House Office of Administration.
A Forbes piece published Tuesday has some more information. Some specific items include:
Gleason previously worked at the U.S. Digital Service—a government agency that Trump turned into DOGE on his first day in office via executive order—from October 2018 to December 2021, according to a LinkedIn page appearing to belong to her.
CBS News said it reached Gleason by phone Tuesday before her name was made public, and it reported she said she was in Mexico and would not comment further.
And:
Gleason’s name had been reported by Wired on Feb. 18 in an article that described her as “a liaison between legacy USDS, DOGE, and other agencies,” but said, “little is known about her official role.”
Gleason also appears on an archived website from the Obama-era White House that lists her as a Champion of Change for her work “as the Chief Operating Officer of CareSync” where she worked to “help patients and their families better coordinate care and improve health outcomes.”
Gleason's (presumed) LinkedIn profile describes her as:
Experienced executive with a demonstrated history of improving healthcare technology, including electronic medical records, practice management, patient solutions, interoperability, and federal civic tech. My work is inspired by my firsthand experience navigating the healthcare system as a patient and caregiver, and I am passionate about creating a better healthcare experience and improving health outcomes.
It's unclear why this person was chosen for this role unless her function is purely administration. She appears to have some experience with electronic records, but in healthcare, not government, and we are aware that the DOGE already has tech wizards aplenty.
So why Amy Gleason?

She may well be a capable administrator, perhaps even capable of handling the taskings of the roaming DOGE hounds that are even now hot on the trail of government waste. The fact that she came back to work for the U.S. government in USDS in January, just before President Trump converted it to the DOGE, is interesting — but we have no idea as to her reasons for taking that job or this one, which we hasten to note she has not admitted to herself. She did work in the Obama administration, also with USDS, so it's not certain that she's a Trump loyalist in particular.
She's not even in the country at the moment, it seems.
On the surface, this seems a somewhat baffling choice. But there's a lot we don't know yet.
