There's a big difference between politics and principles. Politics is a messy business, and among the people involved in it, there is very little consistency. An action taken by Joe Schmo (R-XX) may be roundly condemned by Democrats and the legacy media (but I repeat myself), but the exact same action taken by Harold Snuffy (D-OO) is overlooked. Both sides, to be fair, do this to some extent.
Principles, on the other hand, must be constant. If action A is wrong, then it is wrong no matter who takes said action.
That's why politicians are, correctly, so often accused of hypocrisy: because they are hypocrites. This game, whatever it was in the past, from the Founding onward, is not about serving the American people or preserving the principles of the republic; it's about winning elections, holding on to power, and helping your partisan colleagues do the same, even if it means overlooking some uncomfortable transgressions.
It's all about The Side.
This brings us to the current state of affairs, where we have a President who is failing mentally and physically; no clearer-cut case for invoking the 25th Amendment has existed since that measure was ratified in 1967. Democrats, though, just aren't having it, even though their guy — on their side — is arguably endangering the country with his incompetence.
'Twas not always thus. Just a few short years ago, Democrats were all over the 25th Amendment — as long as it could be used to erase President Trump. Have a look:
These people are downright giggle-worthy in their lust to get President Trump 25th Amendmented into the stratosphere. Now? Crickets.
"Newsbusters" scribe Bill D'Agostino has this to say about the video shown here:
Admittedly, we were even surprised at just how much it was actually invoked; we found over 600 search results for “25th amendment” on Nexis alone, and that’s TV transcripts only.
Former West Wing writer and current MSNBC conspiracy theorist Lawrence O’Donnell deserves a special mention here. This man was talking about the 25th Amendment within less than a month of Trump taking office, and he spent the next three and a half years bragging about how early he’d brought it up.
In O’Donnell’s mind, basically, everything was 25th Amendment territory. He brought on multiple deeply political psychologists to diagnose the President with all manner of neuroses that supposedly rendered him incapable of serving. That particularly ugly brand of credentialism ended up catching on, and soon both O’Donnell’s colleagues and various CNN hosts were wheeling doctors in front of cameras to wring their hands and gravely opine about Trump’s disturbed cognitive state.
Whatever one thinks of former President Trump's somewhat mercurial nature, there just isn't any comparison between his mental state during his presidency — when the above clips originated — and the shambling wreck that Joe Biden is today.

No clearer illustration of politics over principles could derive from this mess. As Mr. D'Agostino points out:
Where are all the mercenary psychiatrists with their politically-motivated armchair diagnoses? Where are all the excited conversations about the President “losing it?” Why isn’t Lawrence O’Donnell out there chanting “25th Amendment” every third sentence?
There are some, of course; you will find them not in the legacy media, not on MSNBC or CNN, but in the "alternative" media: Places like Newsbusters or, candidly, RedState.
There's no easy or simple way to fix this. Politicians are what they are; the majority not only lack principles but lack any form of integrity whatsoever. The best we can do is to stay vigilant, hold their feet to the fire, and call them out at every opportunity. Most of these people do public appearances, town halls, and the like — show up! Ask them questions! Demand explanations if you think they are being hypocritical because, most of the time, you'll be right.
